your opinion on a sketchy ebay situation Last viewed: 48 minutes ago

Need some advice as an ebay noob if you will,

So I have been looking for some very cheap but decent parts to complete an old starter set of mine to sell. Late on a Wednesday night I found a nice looking Tama hi hat stand nobody had bid on and snagged it for 10 bucks with the only bid just as it ended, was pretty happy, 20 bucks shipped.

Anyway, 15 minutes after I paid I got an email from the seller telling me some story about the owner being out of town and it wouldn't go out for a week and "do I want a refund". My thought was that he was unhappy with the low single bid and wanted to relist. I replied - no sweat, I can wait thanks!

So a week goes by and I get a refund email from paypal with the message. "Hi, here's a refund. I dropped the stand and broke it and now it is worth nothing" Just sounds fishy to me.

Am I right to be skeptical since this seller wanted to issue me a refund immediately after I bought it? What would you do? I added him to my favorite sellers to see if he relists it. It justs 20 bucks and I am sure I can find something else, but it just irked me. Should I just let it go?

That definitely sounds fishy. I would file a complaint with eBay, or at least, threaten to. Tell the seller to replace the item with a new one of equal or greater value or you will report him. The seller is bound by your purchase, I believe. If you haven't left feedback, yet, don't. You can use that as leverage, also.

Indeed, sounds very fishy. Everyone wants to get as much for their stuff as they can, but this kind of thing is just not cool.

You'd have to drop a Tama HiHat stand off a very tall building to damage it. Maybe even run it over with a truck just to be sure it's broke :)

Report him to ebay, save the auction pics with the complete auction page, and post negative feedback, you get 80 characters, hope you can tell the story in that.

Ebay won't do anything about it. It's a buyers market now. Trust me. I fought with them tooth and nail for something way more sinister than this. They flat out refused to admit any wrongdoing. Just be glad you got you refund, leave the neg feedback, and move on. Mean people breed. That's the part that sucks!

Should I just let it go?

As opposed to what? Drive to his house and look in the window?

It's not clear what you're really asking here. For whatever reason, you aren't going to get the stand. You cannot prove why or why not. While unlikely, it is possible he really did break it. You can't tell. So leaving negative feedback is a bit extreme - that's for sellers who don't refund your money.

I've had stuff like this happen, and just left neutral feedback. Transaction wasn't good, but the money came back.

"Reporting him to eBay" might soothe your annoyance, but it won't accomplish anything. They have no way to tell if the stand is broken either.

Sorry man, that's the way it goes sometimes. Spend your energy setting up a saved search that emails you, get yourself a stand, and move on.

Thanks for all for the advice. I have had a couple days to mellow on this.

I have had some decent exchanges with the guy and while not convinced about his claim, he does have a 100% feedback and I am not comfortable giving him a neg for this right now.

I have decided to leave no feedback and get emails on his listings. If he relists the same item I will leave neg. feedback. otherwise I am moving on.
