What the heck is this? Last viewed: 7 minutes ago

Hi All,

This is a current eBay auction for Ludwig red floor tom, badge has been switched so I'm unsure of the vintage era. This is etched on lug casing(click pic below).

What the heck does it mean?:2Cents: Here is the link to the auction. Have fun and please respond.

My guess is that it means something special to the person who etched it on there and that it's for identification purposes in case it was stolen.

You buy it, and the number ends up being the phone number of some guy in some weird place where they have phone numbers like that. You phone him and he says the drum was stolen and you end up having to give it back to him.

Hah! That's a hilarious theory, but it's 6 digits. How about a serial # of an older Ludwig?

Since the badge was swapped, and it looks like a re-wrap, maybe the casing was actually from a mid-60's Ludwig.

I think this orphan got a new suit of clothes, and seller added legs like 5 days into the auction.DOH

Or the kit was owned by a school and that is how they inventoried the goods they owned.

One of the geniuses that asked a question IN the auction states that its a 6-ply from the 80's.......WRONG! Look close at the last pic and you wil see its a 3-ply with reinforcement rings. The badge was obviously switched as stated above. And I'll go with the theory of a school ID etched into the lug.

Either way its a mongrel that needs work. I wouldn't waste too much time outbidding each other on this one, since you can't even be sure its a real Ludwig without more mics of the inside of the shell, etc.

Best point in the thread so far IMHO. +1 on this.

And after the mics, it would be great if they added some pics too. :)

My neighbor is a sound guy and he said to put the mics inside the shell.:p

Hey, now I like that theory alot. Maybe it's not even a Ludwig(different badge, rewrap, legs missing)at all, so the orphan may be an imposter in Luddyclothing! thus we need to peek inside the shell some more. That's it, I'm retracting my BID! This is utterTOMfoolery!Laughing H That big LUGthought he fooled us.Yes Sir
