What is this kit? Last viewed: 3 hours ago

I have come across the following Ludwig kit. By the black/white badges I gather it is 80's/ possibly early 90's. There are no serial numbers or dates of any kind, and I have no idea what model the kit is. However the toms sound amazing, really big and resonant, even with damaged factory skins on the bottoms. It sounds good enough that I will buy it for some variation in recordings, but would like to know what I am getting. Can anyone help me out?

Ludwig Rockers made in the 80's, basically the follow up to the Ludwig Standards. The early kits were maple/poplar I believe with a "light chocolate" paint on the insides, later they used a version of Granitone interiors

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

The kit's been messed with a bit it looks like.....the toms are upside down with the badges turned upside down as well......then there's that horrible Pearl tom mount system......not an easy fix, if you are planning to restore the kit to original specs.....

Thanks for your comments. Do you think it's strange that there are no serial numbers on the badges? Did Ludwig never use those pearl-style tom mounts? Strange that someone would make those sort of significant modifications to a relatively low-price kit.

Well....the kit does appear to have a clear maple interior finish, so I would call these the mid-level Rocker series from the 80's, not the lower priced Rocker II's....which oddly enough used the same shells just with interior sealer paint. It's not unusual for them to not have any serial numbers, but I'd say its on the uncommon side. Ludwig did use those style tom mounts but on the bottom of the line IMPORTED Rocker series from the 90's. The kit you have appears to be one of the USA made ones. Modifications like that are not unusual for any era drum, not just ludwigs.....some drummers think that the latest is better and have no qualms about modifications....who ever thought that these "old drums" would ever become collectors items? I certainly didn't back then! I spotted a vintage WFL bass drum in very good shape, except for one thing.....the giant hole drilled in the middle of it for the later Ludwig double tom holder! While it is stronger than the rail mount it came with, it kinda kills its value! DOH

There is a page dedicated to Rockers.

Also, there was a long post about another Rockers set with badges under the tom mounts in the General Section of the forum.
