Hi Dr;

I recently purchased a Slingerland 14x20 Stage Band bass drum off the Bay. The seller said the color was "purple flake". I've never heard of it but paid little attention as I planned to refinish the drum in another color. I suspected from the photos on E Bay the drum was in good condition. When it arrived and I began to do a little light cleaning on the drum, the condition went to remarkable. There is no pitting whatsoever on any of the chrome including the tom rail and the condition seems so good, I cannot in good conscience refinish or change a drum of this condition. The build date stamped inside the shell is Aug 1966.

What is this color called as I would eventually like to hunt down a Stage Band rack and floor tom to make a set. It's definitely not blue sparkle, the sparkle is subtle and plays light in a very cool manner. Thanks for your help

Regards

Actually it is a version of Slingerland's Sparkling Blue Pearl, a version very commonly encountered in this time period of the middle 1960s. You may have already sleuthed this out, but on one of my finish pages there is a contemporary example from 1967, lower right:

Sparkling Blue drums we encounter from this period sometimes appear with the purple highlights like yours, and sometimes are more royal blue. Also, the exact highlight hue often varies noticeably with the lighting!

Very glad to hear you will not refinish - you have an absolute treasure of a drum, very desirable to many. If you have the luxury of a little time and patience, you will find matching Stage Band toms. In fact some have been on eBay fairly recently.

Congratulations, and good hunting!
