vintage pearl (president ?) snare drum Last viewed: 27 minutes ago

Hey guys.. Just needed some info on a particular snare drum. A couple of weeks ago i posted a thread up here for my Canadian brothers on this forum in helping with my search for a vintage MIJ kit, particularly, Pearl President..Well low and behold, i found a 5 piece kit last week, in a pretty rare finish (gold grain pearl) in pretty decent condition..

It also came with some original hardware, like drum throne, snare stand, some cymbal stands, pedal, and original factory Remo Soundmaster heads, of which i'm keeping for simple decorative pieces ;), and a really nice

5.5x14 (chrome?) snare drum..

The snare weighs a bit more than my Supraphonic (not a cob), and was wondering if Pearl made COB snare drums at that time ? (69-72 "President" time line more or less ?) I'm the second owner ..The original owner bought the kit new in '72..

Also, the yellowish hue inside the shell is also telling me that it may in be brass.. Can anyone tell me how to check if it is brass ?

I once heard John Bonham American drum tech Jeff Ocheltree in one of his videos say that they used to scrape the shell behind the lugs to see if it was zinc or brass, and that if it was yellow, then it of course was brass.

The other way to check , i heard, was to use a magnet?..

Any thoughts and info would be appreciated..

I posted a link to a pic of my exact snare drum from the internet from an old ebay auction for a little reference..

Thanks John..I did the magnet test and it stuck, so you're right..

COS.. Whatever the case, i can't wait to play it..Pretty unique snare drum with a cool feature of 2 adjustable tension knobs !. Never seen that on a vintage Pearl snare drum..

From memory... They do have a yellowish tinge on the inner finish...

( I was working with the Oz Pearl distributor in the 70's, so got to handle a few of those)...

Cheers

I have (and have had) several snares with that same shell. I highly recommend them, as they can be tuned to be very sensitive and very dynamic (loud) as well. Great metal snare, in general, period. There are 8 lugs versions of these as well as 10, and most have the adjustable butt too.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Hi guys....

I thought I would jump on this old thread because I think I have one of these drums.

From these pics, could anyone confirm this is a 70s snare?

It has the yellow tinge on the inside of the shell, and also the two snare tension rods. Wondering if they are Pearl ones?

It sounds absolutely amazing!

Any info would be great!
