I just came across a pair of Gretsch soft mallets. I was curious as to how rare these are and what era they are from. The heads are about 2 inches in diameter and there is a hard felt center with a soft exterior sewn on. behind the name on the stick is a number. Is this a serial No. or is it model No.? the No. is: 5261. They seem to be in pretty good condition. the screw and washer are missing from one of them

Hey there, extremebeat !
At a guess (sight unseen), I'd say '50s or '60s. The number is a model number, not a serial.
Probably not worth much on the market, except maybe to a sentimental tympanist. But cool to have. I'd keep 'em in my stick bag. Seems like they'd be nice for cymbal swells.
