20/12/13/16

The last time I played this kit was this past Labor day.

Although not intentionally, we ended up being the closing act.

Whenever we are fortunate enough to play nightime outdoor gigs, we put on a pyrotechnic display that would make Keith Moon proud.

Our finale is always "Free Bird" and as the end of the song nears, Ernie (our unofficial unpaid roadie) crawls up to my kit with a half cup or so of isopropyl alcohol. As the last bar kicks in, Ernie flings the alcohol onto my cymbals and snare and lights it up. The quick burning flames are quite harmless, but it makes a brilliant blue glow and the crowd goes wild!

The last time we performed this stunt, it turned out to be a real showstopper in every sense of the word.

At the Labor Day gig, we were all drinking heavily in recognition of the impending official end of summer. Ernie was so drunk that he forgot where he had put the alcohol, so in his mind, he did the next best thing and filled the cup with gasoline.

When he tossed the contents of the brimming cup onto my cymbals, my kit, and my lap, the pungent gasoline fumes alerted me that something was amiss.

I tried to yell "Don't light it, you azzhoe!" but before I could get the words out, Ernie had already flicked his bic and a big fireball erupted into the night sky.

The crowd went wild.

When Ernie saw that I was on fire, he quickly sized up the situation, and to his credit, grabbed the nearest thing available and heroically began to beat out the flames that now engulfed me. Unfortunately, the nearest thing available was a cymbal stand.

When I regained consciousness, the fire was out, drowned by a combination of beer and my bandmates' urine. My shorts were completely burned off, and I had 3rd degree burns on my thighs, and well.... uh, a bit higher.

The doctors were able to save one testicle, but I was forced to keep my feet in stirrups (you ladies know what I'm talking about) for 5 1/2 weeks while the skin grafts healed.

My buddies tried to keep my spirits up but I soon tired of the oft repeated "Look out! It's the Uni-Baller!" And it got old when they constantly reminded me that they WOULD **** on me if I were on fire.

Their most creative prank involved slipping a few Extenze tablets into my medication cup. I had always been skeptical of those products, but I soon learned that the manufacturers claim about the effect on "that certain part of the male anatomy" was true!

Unfortunately, I also learned that burned skin loses most of it's elasticity.

What jokers!

By Christmas, I could pretty much walk without crutches. A couple of weeks ago, I ambled over to Ernie's to see what was left of my kit. Ernie had tossed the drums into his garage and forgot about them. Had he taken the time to dry out the residual "moisture" from the inside of the bass, it would have worked out much better.

By now, the interior was covered by a fragrant black furry sort of growth that had caused the plies to separate (see picture # 8). It just barely supports the weight of 2 toms. One of the reinforcement rings actually fell out during the photo session. As a matter of fact, I'm not even sure that stachybotrys-laden items can even be shipped at all. So.....

Most of the hardware was fried, and what wasn't is now covered with protective layers of rust.

The inlays are gone, but the hoops remain.

None of the drums were seriously charred where the wrap had burned off, and under the lugs and tom/leg mounts, I found pristine pieces of black oyster pearl.

I figured that some creative-type person could piece those scraps together and make it look new again.

Or not.

They could even be rewrapped! The tom interiors are relatively unscathed, and hey... they ARE still Ludwig black oyster pearls (although a tad heavy on the black).

I would keep them and do it myself but I have to sell some things to pay off that heap of medical bills.

I thought I was covered by insurance, but they denied the claims, contending that stupid was a pre-existing condition.

Obama is right... we need reform NOW.

Until then though, help a brother out.

Terms

-Pay quickly, or at least within 3 days

-Kit will be shipped via fully insured UPS ground

*****************************************************************************

P.S. All seriousness aside, these drums would make a great rewrap project, after you shave the interior of the bass and do something about the ugly, but functional hardware.

Or you could play them like they are and try to pass off this story as your own!

Re-printed with permission of the ebay listor.

Just sounds to me like the kit was left outside in the rain, probably had nothing

to do with any kind of pyrotechnic thing at all.

Dumpster time from the looks of that water logged shell unless some of

you super studs can repair something like that.

The wrap just peeled off in the rain too.

Found it!!
