I just can't get set up right on my 59 Slingerlands. I have my single 13" tom mounted in the highest position on the original consolette rail but at 6'2 and 285 pounds by the time I get my snare up high enough that I'm not resting my hands on my knees while playing I can't get at the 13" tom without my hands resting or hitting the snare. It's like the kit was built for somebody maybe 5'10 or something. I am thinking about mounting the tom on a snare stand but have heard it will kill the tone or something? any ideas?
Tom on Snare Stand?? Last viewed: 16 minutes ago
I have a a 65 Slingerland 13/16/22 with the rail mount. I have used to a snare stand since I purchased them and found that the rail mount kills just as much tone as the snare stand does.
Now, I'm playing with the 16" converted to a bass drum, so I have to use the stand. I wouldn't go back, any day. My two cents.
I use a snare stand to hold my Slingerland tom. It works fine and sounds great. Just don't tighten the basket to much and cause your tom to choke.. I let my tom lie in the basket and only have the basket closed enough to keep the tom from falling out, but at the angle I set it there is no danger of it falling out.
I prefer a snare basket for my tom, even when I have a mount. I've done some simple comparisons, & feel both the tom & bass drum sound better when isolated. I keep the basket loose & make sure my tom rim is sitting on some rubber. This works out because I position the tom to be relatively flat. & not tilted.
+ 1 on using a snare stand for the tom.
++1 here also love em. they are super easily adjustable. and they have great placement on the kit. and it looks cool!!
Someone was selling replacement arms that were longer than the originals, but I don't remember who.maybe Precision.
I would use a RIMS type mount and hang it off a cymbal stand.
I find that the rail and snare stand both choke the tom.
I found the stands for practice pads will come up a little higher than a regular snare stand. The only down side is that it won't hold larger toms.
