I've got a 1979 Tama superstar, birch, in sunburst, or desert burst it may actually be called (pic in gallery for reference). Anyway, the sunburst finish was pretty rare, in that it wasn't released in the US. The sizes of the rack toms are 13 and 14. I've resigned myself to perhaps never finding a matching 12" for it, but do any of you know which Tama drums, possibly from a more modern era would sound correct, if not match the kit? Even vintage superstar toms from that era not in that finish are proving quite elusive. Thanks in advance!
(Arghh I can't edit 'Tamam' from the thread title!!)

Brody,
Are you sure that finish is factory? It looks uneven along the burst. It looks as tho someone did a custom job to a natural finish set of sups. I'd look for another and customize it yourself or have someone do it if you aren't confident..
Is that you in the pic too?

Yes, the finish is factory - though there are a lot of nicks and scrapes. When I was originally trying to find out more about it, a guy on another forum send me shots of his kit in the same finish - it was identical to mine. They are scarce, and as I mentioned were not released in the US. I agree though, it does look uneven, and the fact that the toms fade one way and the bass drum in and out is odd too. so perhaps there were so few kits released because they realised they couldn't get it looking even or something?
Yes, that is me, though at the moment I am sporting Musketeer-style facial hair!

Even if it is factory, I'd still get a natural one and have someone or do it yourself, (it doesn't have to be even apparently) put a fade on it.

Looks like he also is using standard size tom configuration. I didn't know Tama
made extended tom sizes as early as your SuperStars. Currently I'm getting
a SuperStar kit in cherry wine, have the mint kick 16 x 22 and a not so
mint 6 1/2 x 14 snare so far. Had a 4 piece Lenny White standard model
back in the late 80's but stupidly sold it dirt cheap, but I had just bought
a Granstar Custom set up, which is still my main set. Great birch drums the

Nice! They do sound great - I'm keeping hold of them, but as for getting myself a 12 to go with em, I don't think I'd be able to do a fade myself. It would be nice if someone manufactured a repro wrap in a fade!

Thanks a lot for that! Just had a quick look - nice idea! Though this site refers to sunbursts, and the toms are actually a fade. However, I suppose the masking principle would be the same, just round instead of outwards with the the toned colours supplied. What did you do, just apply a card mask in a strip round the drum?
