Noticed these on ebay http://tinyurl.com/co2dp7

I know my 80's Tama sunburst sounds good, though the toms are not too great, the bass drum is monstrous - Birch. I'm a bit confused as to the interiors on the shells on this listing though - they don't look natural wood or painted. Is this common for 70's Tama stuff? How does 70's tama sound in relation to early 80's stuff?

Just wondering as it's a nice looking set.

Tama Superstar, 22, 22, 16, 14, 13 Desert Burst
Premier Genista, 22, 16, 13, 12 Black Lacquer
Premier Genista, 20, 14, 10 and snare Black Lacquer
Premier Resonator 22, 16, 14, 13 poly creme/black
Zickos 22, 16, 14, 13, clear acrylic and snare

That interior looks like the Zola-Coat. I had an early 80's Imperialstar kit with that same coating. My bearing edges weren't painted though. That's a new one. They didn't sound great. They aren't made of birch or any such wood. It's the cheapo asian soft stuff that was used back then and is so prevalent today. Yucky. You can work the wood and edges to get a really good sound, but out of the box ... I would rather play the box. They won't sound anything like your birch bass. Not even close. The problem with these is that Zola-Coat. You can't really work the wood to improve the sound. It was frustrating.

Cheers for that. I thought it looked like base wood or something - I just didn't think they used such generic stuff in the 70's especially as my 80's one is birch! Think I'll give it a miss.
