Slingerland WMP Artist Questions Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hi Dr.CJW,

I posted this on the Vintage Drum Forum and did not receive any answers so I am paring it down and hoping that you might be able to shed some light for me concerning these Slingerlands WMPs.

The set consist of 12/13/16/22 black and silver Niles badges with serials in the 107xxx - 109xxx, clear maple interiors, large tone controls, setomatic chrome dual tom mount, snare stand, bass pedal, hihat and two cymbal straight stands. The kit appears to be original to itself, vibrant wrap and I would say a strong 8 of 10...not collectors grade, but very good condition. I think according to the chart they are 1970-1972.

The snare is a matching 5x14 Artist, but with the black and gold Niles badge. Here is what I know on this drum:

1. serial number of 105550

2. 8 lug sound kings

3. Zoomatic strainer

4. Original Slingerland snares??? (see below)

5. I believe it is 3 ply w/rings

6. Interior appears to be painted in a tan versus natural maple like the set

7. Drum is in great shape, vibrant wrap, great chrome. Condition 8.5 of 10 (seems to be a 3" crack/split on center of inner ply running side to side, not up and down and does not effect sound nor integrity)

8. Tone control small knob

9. Strainer side does not have a plate to go over the string, it just threads through the holes

Questions:

1. The original snares have a metal strap on one end with a rivet and stretch over the snare bed and beyond on the overextended butt end...correct?

2. Is the tan interior paint the chocolate milk referred to?

3. I think the snare is between 1968-1970 according to your time line...could this be correct?

4. Could this be a Buddy Rich model?

5. Is the Zoomatic correct with no plate, just a square piece of metal with holes for string on the strainer side? I see some pics with and some without. I don't see a place to connect one with any screws.

I was going to sell the whole lot, but after restoring the snare (heads/attaching the snare/tuning), it sounds awesome! Eventhough I just saw one sell for $600, I am no longer sure I want to sell it!

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Hey Gino, Your Slingerland Snare is a true gem in my opinion! The Weak Milk Chocolate is the term used for that Tan paint on the interior of the shell. It was used by Slingerland for product marketing back in the mid 60's and early 70's. The Shell is a 3 Ply Mahogany/Poplar/Maple Shell with Maple Reinforcing Rings. Underneath the Tan Paint is the Maple Ply. The Shell should also have those deep, half moon shaped Snare Beds at the ends of the Butt plate and the Zoomatic Strainer. The Zoomatic Strainer is correct as well, it should only be allowed to have snare cord through the holes. And the Snares that came with the drum are correct as well. If you need a replacement, Puresound Snare Wires makes one for this Artist Snare. The Metal Strap that comes with the Snare Wires is normal, it allows the snares to be extended a little further. It may be a Buddy Rich model, I am not sure. The Dr. would know for sure. If I were you I would not sell it! Hold on to that drum! Take care. Phil Cormier Fitchburg, Mass 01420

Phil,

Thanks for your response! You are correct, it does have the deep half moon snare beds and everything is as you described. I hope the Dr. can weigh in on whether it truly is a Buddy Rich.

As for selling it, I came close, especially when I saw one go for $600 the other day. I was going to sell it to buy something new in a wood snare and a closer looking match to my Sonor Signatures in red lacquer. However, it just sounds so good and it's a classic to boot. It is my only wood snare. My other two are a Ludwig Hammered Bronze and a Pearl free-floating brass and neither have the crack nor classic wood tone (obviously) that this one does. So I think I am now going to keep the entire Slingerland WMP set and might even start collecting more vintage Slingerlands...and I hardly even play anymore...hope I don't get divorced!

[COLOR="Navy"]sonorsigs:

1. Correct, the 1960?s #153 Artist used the Zoomatic with Leedy extension butt plate, with snares extended off the head on the butt side only, as you describe.

2. Yes, to aid discussion I describe the tan interior stain as looking like ?weak chocolate milk?.

3. Your snare drum is late 1966 ? probably October or November.

4. The model #153 was played by Buddy Rich beginning in 1968. In 1966 when your drum was made Slingerland was not yet using the name Buddy Rich for the #153.

5. Yes, the 1966 Zoomatic has a simple 7/8?-wide slider with two holes to which the snare cord is tied.
