Hi Dr. What type of machine or tool did Slingerland use to cut their Snare Beds with? Specifically on their 1964-1969 Artist model Snare Drums? And was there a real significant difference-depth and width wise-between the Snare Beds on the Solid Maple Shell Artist and the 3-Ply Shell Artist Snares? Any info would be great. Thanks again for all your help! Take care. Phil Cormier Fitchburg, Mass 01420
Slingerland style vintage Snare Beds? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

1960's snare beds were cut with a routing jig. You can do the same job on a new shell with your Dremel tool and routing bit - use (carefully of course) a fine grain sanding bit.
Slingerland's snare beds - believe it or not - make for a moderately fun topic. I'd like to say more on this later. But Slingerland's beds were done by hand so expect to see some variability. Snare beds tended to be a bit deeper on the 1950's and early 1960's drums, with a progression towards shallower beds as the 1960s progressed. If you're comparing solid and ply shell snare drums during 1964 - 1969, bear in mind 1964 was effectively the last full year of solid shell snare drums, so comparison opportunity is limited. There were very few solid shells by 1965, and the beds had become more modest by that year.
