AAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!New Chinese Gretsch over these drums??? ouch. These drums are heads and shoulders above those Chinese imports.

Exactly...I almost fell outta my chair when I read that, Dave. Eye Ball

With snare and some hardware, that Slingy kit is worth $750 easy.

Minus the snare, with hardware, about $600.

Just the drums (4 toms and bass) $500.

Add another $100-150 to value if a set of cymbals are thrown in.

I really agree with McJ...for 6 bill$....you can buy a lot worse contemporary stuff....and most $600 new drums will be just that...a lot worse.

I agree also about the new $600.00 kit.

That said, if I were in DaveGH's shoes and I knew that I could get closer to $800.00 for the outboard, I'd sell the motor outright and put the cash towards a nice vintage kit.

The Slingy's are nice, no question, but it's a buyers market right now and nice or not, Slingerland drums have generally been lower priced compared to the other top US brands.

I'm looking at a pre-serial ludwig hollywood for around $600. But don't know if I should bite. I'm gonna go see it in maybe a week or two.FYI ....Get this...it comes with a ludwig snare and it might be a cob 400, or a jazz fest, or a pioneer, or a normal supra. Gosh I'm excited.

Ok, my bad, lol. Being a total newbie, it didn't seem like there was much enthusiasm for the Slingerland and they weren't that expensive considering the vintage. You see Ludwigs for top dollar or a Gibson guitar etc.. so it had me wondering about either the quality or sound of the old (or is it "vintage"?...) Slingerlands. And like I said, I drummed a little in high school and 25+ years later want to try it again in earnest.

btw- there is no hardware with the set but does have a Ludwig Standard? snare. In the end it seems that the trade would be fair but a long drive to get them might dissuade me. I haven't heard much negative about the Gretsch Catalina series (for the $) but maybe that stuff is like a bad word around here;).

Yep, lots more bang for the buck with vintage Slingerland drums. You could get "fully dressed" with $800 cash, and wouldn't have to limit your choices to one kit.

Gretsch Catalina drums are a good gigging kit. No doubts. But, if given the choice between a Chinese Gretsch kit and a Vintage American kit...no choice, really. They will both do the job, but one will look and sound oh so sweet while doing the job. The other will just get the job done. Subtle, but there is a difference.

Absolutely unfounded. Most all get assistance. There are some that are missed. Not all of us are perfect. This better not be happening. That would be an incredibly unethical maneuver. If you have proof, please provide it. That's a very serious breach and should be reported openly so that we know who to avoid dealing with in the future. I can assure you, I would not have any dealings with someone who was that dark and low. Period.Again, absolute bunk. Not all requests are answered. That's life. Most requests are handled within a reasonable amount of time. We are not a bunch of appraisers who are sitting at the keyboard awaiting the next lot to be wheeled in. We are just a group of people who love and appreciate good vintage drum equipment. We share stories and advice and help one another out. Pretty cool stuff, if you were to ask me.Excellent advice. That's the sort of logic that should be provided to an inquiry. You are right on the money.Absolutely! That's why some of us don't give out values. They are obtainable for most anyone. Educating others is where growth takes place. You have done exactly what should have been done in this case. However, I would add that the chances of finding several 5 ply Slingy kits sold on ebay might be tough. They just don't appear too often. The 5 ply value is a bit less than the 3 ply kits. Also, the gold sparkle wrap appears in good shape. That will add to the value. The addition of non-Slingy hardware will bring the value down. Those are almost all of the pieces to the puzzle you missed. Pretty good job.A new guy doesn't have shrapnel.

Michael, I'm glad someone else saw the transparency of his post. I love when the uninformed try to inform others, don't you? DOH

Actually, he did a pretty good job of guiding the man. Other than the personal bits, his advice was very close to being on the mark. The personal bits were a bit much (and I addressed those), but the logic behind his advice was sound. There were some nuances that were missed, but otherwise pretty sound. That's growth, and from my seat...that's pretty cool. I'm all for growth and healing. Hopefully, this is a step closer to where we could be.

The drums don't care that's for sure. The audience however... they care :)To answer the original poster - If you could sell the outboard for between $600.00 and $800.00 and do it quickly, then I'd go that route.Having that kind of cash at hand, you'd likely find a better deal/kit if you went looking. Your options would be greater too.Value on the Slingys pictured in todays market - Maybe $500.00 tops for just the shells (no extra hardware) in my neighborhood.

Funny Post

Thanks for putting a hard number out there too, by the way. You are a scholar and a gentleman.

have a wonderful evening!!!

I will accept this as positive constructive criticism and thank you for your evaulation. This is not sarcasm either, as some may have a hard time "reading" my posts.

I was actually remembering your Slingerland set you were selling for a TV MONITOR LoLoLoLo where you couldn't get one price for a good long while.

To all of the guys who took, again, what I said to the negative I stand by the fact that a price is pretty hard to get for probably many reasons. I was not suggesting a syndicate that is hoarding vintage drums on the cheap. I was merely suggesting that if more actual dollar amounts were provided, this site would be all the better for it. Even cooler, a barometer would somehow be created for different areas of the country and the values of certain drums at these different locations. Even if people simply posted what they would be willing to pay for it, as this is what it's value is to that person, that would be cool.

Well, I seriously gotta clean up the place before my wife has a tizzy!!

have a grand evening
