Slingerland "P" Stamp Last viewed: 5 minutes ago

Doc,

I have a Slingerland snare which I have dated (thanks to your great badge resource) somewhere between 1956 and 1960. It has the letter P stamped on the inside of the shell, which I find curious. I have seen the same P stamped on the inside of a completely seperate floor tom from almost 10 years later. Is this common among Slingerland drums? To what does it refer?

Thanks in Advance

I believe it stands for Pearl - i.e. intended to be wrapped.

Shells with M stamps are maple - intended to be lacquered.

Correct - the "P" stamp was put there after the shell was made. The exterior ply characteristics, and in particular the shell diameter, was judged best suited for a pearl wrap.
