Hi Dr. I hope you had a Merry Christmas! When did Slingerland start using Chrome over Steel Stick Saver metal hoops on their Wood and Metal Shell Snare Drums? I had heard something to the fact that they started using COS Hoops during the late 60's into the 1970's on their Drums. I own a 3-ply COW Slingerland Artist Snare from the mid 1970's and I am trying to find the right era metal hoops for it, what would the correct metal hoops be for this COW 3-ply Artist Snare-COB or COS Hoops? Any info would be great. Thanks again for your time and have a Happy New Year 2007! Phil Cormier Fitchburg, Mass 01420

Thank you, and I hope your Christmas was a joyful one.
COS hoops started in 1970.

Dr. could you clarify about when the different versions of the "stick-saver" hoops were used (see quote below). I have a couple of Slingerland COB Gene Krupa drums and the newer one (has a higher serial number) has the lower profile hoop with the more significant turned in flange on the top edge.
A couple of questions:
Were the two stick-saver hoop versions manufactured simultaneously?
Were they used only on specific snare drum models or during specific years of manufacture?
I have a preference for the more turned in top edge flange version, and I'm always looking to buy them, so whatever info you can supply to help me search would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Doug
Actually there are several different versions of the Slingerland "rim shot" or "stick-saver" hoop, differing in several respects, though the overall look from a distance appears the same. I'll discuss this in detail in future articles, but the hoop you are mainly referencing is a classic COS hoop profile that appeared in the 1970s and 1980s. It is indeed taller above the flesh hoop of the head, with a more modest inward flange at the top edge. And yes this latter feature contrasts with the earliest COS hoops and with the earlier COB hoops.
There was no earth shattering reason for it in terms of a performance goal; it had a slightly different cosmetic look, and was also marginally easier to make.
