Slingerland 'Augx 1966' ? Last viewed: 13 minutes ago

Dear Dr C.J.Wenk and Slingerland Forum,

I am the owner of an Aug 1966 BlueSparkle Modern Solo Maple Shelled clear interior Slingerland 20x14/16x16/8x12/8x12. With the 171 tom holder and Niles black and Brass badges.

Apart from the Bass stamp ('Aug66') the shells have an x stamped after the month ('Augx 1966') and full year stamp not just 'Aug66'. All are stamped P for the finish too.

Does anyone know what that 'X' means? It's been bugging me for years !! The drums sound great so don't think they were seconds. There was some slight glue residue inside one of the small toms...

The only thing is the wraps are slightly differnt shade but I think that's just age. From a dark blue/purple on the Bass and one small tom, to a slightly lighter blue on the floor tom and other tom. I read that the dyes were inconsistent in the 60's with this finish ?

The serial numbers on lighter tom tom and floor tom are both 101,*** and 124,*** on both the darker bass and other small tom. It came with a beautiful solid maple shell Artists model Snare (zoomatic strainer ) in a more turquoise blue colour with no date stamp and much lower serial number than the rest of the kit. 56,***.

I hope some one can shed some light on my mystery X's.

Thanks For your help

Will

Dear Dr C.J.Wenk,

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question. It is very much appreciated and you articulated the answer to me perfectly. Such a simple mystery has been solved for me and I quite like the x's and after wondering for three years I am very happily de-mystified.

If it is not too much trouble to ask ...I was wondering what your thoughts were on the two shades of blue on my toms and bass ?

They do not have any sunlight fade and individually look brand new. Did Slingerland sometimes put a kit together with slightly different sparkling blue pearl finishes ?

I know it may be hard to tell without pictures but the darker colours on the bass and small tom match exactly the 1967 swatch on your article ( both in the 124,*** range)

The lighter floor tom and other small tom match the 1964 swatch ( both in the 101,*** range) . My snare matches the 1958 swatch and is 56,***.

It may be an obvious or pointless question to ask so no worries if you don't have the time to answer. It's a beautiful kit and sounds great which is most important !! Thank you so much for the reply.

Best wishes

Will
