Anyone able to tell me what a good price for this Slingerland would be? Just the three drums.

Here's the pitch on the ad

"Slingerland Ultra Rare, 1960's Vintage Drums! In Silver Sparkle Finish. The Sizes of these Awesome Sounding Drums are as follows; 20x14 Bass Drum, 12x8 Tom and 16x16 Floor Tom.These Drums are In Excellent Condition and Feature Rare Black and Gold Niles Badges, and Remo Heads."

As well as a rough idea on price, I'm not overly familiar with Slingerlands... how do compare to Gretschs/Ludwigs?

It 'appears' to be from the 60's. The bass mount is correct. The description of the tag is correct. The hardware seems to be correct. It looks like the inside of the shell has the chocolate milk paint. Without the serial numbers, it's tougher to pin down. It doesn't have a snare or a tom mount. If the wrap is original and there are no other hidden variables...

I would say the $400-500 range would be good. I've paid more and I've paid less. Some will dispute this to be low. Some will agree. What you will find is there are no precise guidelines for pricing these drums. It comes down to what the buyer will pay. Search this forum out and you will see this time and again.

As far as comparing them to other American drums...

These drums sound wonderful. The shells are constructed very similar to Ludwig with a 3 ply build. Depending on the precise timeline, it has either mahogany or maple for the outer/inner ply. Because they are wrapped, they more than likely have a mahogany outer ply. That is not an absolute, though. They have a sound that is difficult to discern from Ludwig. Quality is on par with Ludwig. Between the two, I would take one of each. That's what I've done. I love them both. I can't imagine why I ever played modern drums. Live and learn.

Gretsch is a different animal. They are a Jasper shell with a maple and gumwood build. They have a different sound. Some like them. Some don't.

Really appreciate your reply mcjnic, I'll do some reading up. I recently decided to sell my Gretsch (you might see my other thread, just posted) and hunt for a Ludwig or another style of vintage kit... The asking price on this Slinger is $1950AU, approx $1,280USD. Buying vintage kits in Australia does seem to cost a bit more, I guess its as there aren't so many around and it costs a lot to ship them here if we buy them from the US now ... its a drag. I saw so many awesome and affordable vintage kits in the US while I was there. Thanks again for your response.

It's a high price...i understand of course that prices would be higher in AU. Even with the original snare included, it's a high price.

Almost better off having someone in US buy you a kit for $400-600 and shipping it...it'd still come out cheaper than what this guy is asking.

Yeah, "ultra-rare" I wouldn't call 'em, but the look nice...although I am wondering if there's a lack of tom mount on the rack (?) Looks like it's cherry, though.

It does look pretty good. As for slingerland silver sparkle you just don't see that many. I bought a 64 silver sparkle slingerland kit last year that was absolutely imaculate. The chrome and wrap were mint. The only problem was that someone recut the edges and put 45's on them. I sold them to my son for a hundred less than I payed for them. 20" bass, two 12" rack toms and a 14x14 and 16x16 floor toms. They still sound pretty good. He had them set up with one rack and the 14 floor. I was there last week and we set them up as the full kit, man they looked cool. I'll get some pics.

Looking at the photo, those Slingerlands look amazingly clean for a '60s set. I'd wager they're a re-wrap - a good job, but likely a re-wrap.

There was likely a diamond plate on the 8X12 and a two-bolt rail consolette on the bass drum - now the holes have been plugged and the re-wrap covers them up.

Just a guess.

But they do look sweet.

Maybe it's just my eyes, but that bass drum tom mount looks a little off-center. -?

Bass drum mount could be off a bit but I think it is probably original. The kit that my son has uses that same mount. The rack toms both have diamond plates. It has a Leedy post with a double clip mount that is original to the kit.
