Hey VDF,
I'm in the beginning stages of "reinventing" my snare drum sound and could use some advice: I want to purchase 2 to 3 snare drums to cover a solid base..let me say that after purchasing my '70 3ply ludwig kit (which some of y'all helped me out with) that I am a vintage drum fanatic!!!
1) Definitely a 6.5 Ludwig BB for my workhorse.
2) Possibly a vintage Radio King (wood) to get that funky/dry/high pitched pop/crack. (which to me sounds so good in videos)
3) A Rogers Powertone (Chrome over Brass) for a super fat, dry, and low punch..
I have never heard the second 2 in person.. but various youtube videos of these snares have captured my interest, particularly this one: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SwSPfCSFz0[/ame]
I am so jealous of that guy...
So my questions are..with the powertone; is there anything to be wary of in terms of reliability? Could the powertone achieve my desired sound over a Dynasonic/Acrolite/Supraphonic? They just seem to be sooo freakin low and punchy in all the videos I've seen.. Also, could anyone recommend another snare that would suit this area well?
I appreciate your help guys. I feel like I'm adopting child when considering a new snare..but I'm sure some of you can relate am I right??
