Rogers Foot Pedal - Help Identifying? Last viewed: 4 hours ago

I just got this Rogers bass pedal... it looks really cool but I don't know much about it... seems to be from the 70's I'd guess... probably a Swiv-o-matic.

The unit appears to work okay, but the screw for the swivel is missing... I'd like to get something that looks authentic... any idea what it's supposed to look like?

That's a swivomatic pedal. Probably a mid 70's version since it has the clamp for the bass drum hoop rather than attaching to a plate that you left on the drum like the earlier ones did (I'm not sure when that changed but I think it was the Memri-Loc hardware came out in the mid 70's).

KO,

I think you're right. From the lever clamp on this Swivo pedal, this must be a late transition model just before the Big-R era. Every catalog from 1962 through the end of the Swivo era (1975) shows the detachable hoop clamp on all Swivo pedals. The 1975 parts catalog shows the newer lever clamp mechanism on the new Big-R Supreme pedal...

So there must have been a very short period when the last of the Swivo pedals were outfitted with the newer lever clamp. The two Swivo pedals I purchased new in the summer of 1975 both had the detachable hoop clamp, so I'm really curious as to when this "Big-R" lever clamp made its way onto the Swivo pedals. Maybe some other Rogers guys can weigh in on this.

The 76/77 Rogers catalog still shows the Swivomatic pedal as having the hoop clamp attachment plate. I also have a Swivo pedal with the Supreme style lever clamp and wonder if they simply shipped some of the Swivo pedals with Supreme lever style bases due to what may have been available at the time of stocking orders.

Having played nothing but Rogers drums and Rogers Swivo-Matic pedals for the past 15 years, I thought I might be able to help you here. I have a Rogers BD pedal collection that includes EVERY pedal Rogers made from the Jet right up to the Big R Supreme. With that said, I took some pics of the Swivel Unit on the pedal you have so you can see what Rogers used for a securing screw. Hope this helps!

Of course you would! We should have known. So exactly when did this Supreme-type lever clamp replace the detachable hoop clamp on the Swivo pedal? It must have been for a very short period just before the Swivo pedal was phased out.

Hey Mike!...

...and you made me laugh! I know, right??!! Anyway... the actual date on this variant is difficult to pin down based on catalog entries, so... I culled through my Rogers Parts booklets and found this: In 1973 the standard Swivo-Matic was still shown in the catalog and parts booklets, but by 1975, the Big "R" Supreme bass drum pedal was offered, and both the "transitional" lever clamp Swivo and the Supreme SHARE a lot of the same parts. So, we would have to figure that this model Swivo with the clamp lever came in at/around the same time as the Big "R" Supreme based on the parts they share, with the clamping system being one of them, but!... that seems to NOT be the case! The Swivo-Matic with the clamping system FINALLY makes its debut in the 1983 Rogers catalog! Here's a pic of all THREE from the 1983 Rogers catalog. Interesting! I Had to make the pic smaller than I normally would for clarity. The catalog pics are very "coarse" in texture, but you can see all three of 'em!

Wow! Thanks for that Tommy. I would have never guessed that it would have been that late. I too assumed it was a transitional pedal in or around 75-76. I did not even realize that they still offered the Swivo style footboard in the 80s. My catalogs end at 76. I need to fix that!

Mystery solved! And thanks once again Tommy for your expertise. I don't think I'm the only Rogers owner who just assumed that the Swivo pedal was phased out along with all the other Swivo hardware when the Big R Memriloc stuff was introduced. Who would have thought that Rogers would keep producing this one Swivo item long after the Swivo high hats, cymbal stands, and mounts were all retired. Why they kept producing the Swivo pedal is another question, but there obviously must have been demand for what was the most versatile, adjustable pedal ever made.

The 1983 catalog does in fact confirm the final availability of the Swivo pedal, as it came standard on the Big R "Heritage" setup (18" bass and 14"FT!) ...

I can see the advantage of the lever clamp, as it enabled the user to easily attach the pedal on different bass drums without the need for multiple detachable hoop clamp assemblies. Wouldn't mind owning one of these.

Mike/randy73!

What I believe to be the reason for continuing with the Swivo-Matic as deep as 1983, but of course UPGRADED borrowing Supreme pedal parts, as well as the clamping system .. ( which for the record Mike, agreed!... and that was the main WHY behind my picking one of these up years ago. You can use a Swivo anywhere with any drums! ) .. is:

Not everyone was in love with the Big "R" Supreme pedal! I had one... I wanted to like it ... but I didn't. I thought it was TOO BIG, and even though it borrows heavily from the original Swivo-Matic, I didn't think it really FELT like a Swivo-Matic. I thought it was clunky and a tad slow. I only make mention of this because I'll bet a lot of guy's felt that way too .. thus .. Rogers never stopped producing the Swivo-Matic as it was an excellent alternative to the "more modern" redesigned Supreme. The Swivo-Matic BD pedal IS Rogers! It's kind of like their flagship. Just my thoughts of course!, but it does give one pause...
