Rogers Buddy Rich Headliner set Last viewed: 12 hours ago

This is a Rogers Buddy Rich Headliner drum set i#1805 in Champagne Sparkle finish with Bread & Butter lugs. It is 20-12-14 with a matching Powertone snare. (I am sure Tommyp will know which one it is, if it isn't no. 1805)

These drums were all made very close to each other - the same person initialed the floor tom, the rack tom & the snare. The tags were Holiday #34275 for the 20 inch Bass - #34278 for the 14 inch Floor Tom - #34309 for the 12 inch tom and #1703 Powertone model for the snare.

Hey Mike!

Those look pretty nice! Can you upload/attach a larger pic though? Would be a lot easier to have a look!

Tommy,

I just replaced the other picture and put up a larger file, I hope it works.

I got the drums Saturday was up until 4am Sat nite/Sunday morning and then I got up at 8am on Sunday and worked all day until I finished the detail at 10pm Sunday nite.

The set is missing 9 Cleveland tension rods (I think 2 1/4 inch collar to tip), and it has several cracked lugs about 15 altogether - but it really came out nice. I am looking to get a nice tom holder and 2 nice bass drum spur mounts for the 20 inch.

So, what do you think?

It is the 1805 - isn't it?

Just in case the picture attachment doesn't work here is one below...

Hey Mike!

Excellent that you got a larger pic up... makes it much easier to see! Anyway, this kit could go a couple different ways. Because,

It certainly could be the #1805 as the sizes you have are indicative of that... but! ... it could also be the Rogers "Buddy Rich Headliner" #2806... ( still with Bread & Butter ) ... with a 14X14 in place of the 16X16, and a wood color matched Powertone in place of the COB, both of which were permissable/cataloged substitutions.

Without the rest of the hardware... ( it is missing, yes? ) ... there's no way to know for sure, as both these model kits came with different hardware, ie: Snare drum stand, HH stand, etc.

I don't know how accurate the serial numbers are/were on the interior labels back then regarding dating. I have usually "dated" kits based on other contributing factors such as finish, hardware, possible substitutions, etc. Regardless,

Yet another FINE addition to the MikeJtone stable of Rogers thoroughbreds!

Tommy,

Thank you for the follow up and the compliment - coming from you it means alot to me. There was a Swan Leg Hi Hat & a Swivo Foot Pedal with the set, but the owner liked the action on the Hi Hat so he kept that. Still it was a good deal both ways. It really looks nice but I need to get used to the 20-12-14 inch kit, it has a lighter/brighter sound - the Powertone is awesome.

Tommy thank you for your continued encouragement, now if I could only find a 6 1/2" Powertone in Mardi Gras or even a 5" - then, well I'd probably keep looking for something else!

Thanks again, Mike

Hello again Mike!

Okay!... based on the hardware that was supplied with your kit, I would say that you have model #2806 ( with correct/cataloged substitutions: 14X14 and wood Powertone ) as this kit came with the Swivo-Matic Swan Leg HH and the Swivo bass drum pedal. The snare drum stand would have been the Rogers Giant model. This puts your kit at 1964.

The #1805 "Buddy Rich Headliner" would have been of 1962 manufacture, and is essentially the exact same kit with the exception of different/earlier hardware. The snare drum stand would have been the Buck Rogers model, the HH would have been the HH Sock Pedal... ( same as the old Slingerland of the day ) ... and the bass drum pedal was still the Swivo. Again,

This is a tad speculative as we really don't know for sure what hardware was originally supplied, and it could certainly have been replaced/upgraded at some point too. For the sake of the history and detective work, it does give you an ideal range of the year of manufacture though, which is kind of neat to figure out!

ENJOY those Rogers Mike!

Tommy,

Thank you again - I thought that I had it nailed and still there is a wrinkle. The pedal & the stands are just another facet that I never considered. Well #2806 it is! Buddy Rich Headliner! From around 1962 -1964.

Thanks, Mike
