I don't know the answer, but my speculation is that Rogers obtained theirs from a different vendor until Ludwig stopped using oyster black pearl in favor of the "bowling ball" version. I think that took place in 1969. Then I think it is possible Rogers accessed that supply. In the earlier years of using black strata - late '67 early 68, it was a different material. More like a rock strata than an oyster. Later on it is pretty much the same as oyster black pearl.
