Remo "Classic Fit" heads for vintage drums and "Felt Tone" heads. Last viewed: 5 hours ago

Greetings,

Has anyone ever tried the new (Available as of NAMM in January 2017) Remo "Classic Fit" heads? They are available in both clear and coated in Ambassador weight, and in Fiberskyn 3 Diplomat weight.

These are Remo's answer to the Aquarian "American Vintage" series and are made specifically for vintage drums that have slightly larger than usual diameters, due to shell construction or thicker wraps etc. We all know the drill.

It's nice to finally have a choice besides the Aquarian American Vintage series. Plus these heads have an ultra-cool retro logo (See attached). Has anyone tried them on modern drums? I would love to honestly get a few of these and try them out, because I use coated Ambassadors anyway, and I totally dig the retro logo.

Along those same lines, has anyone tried out the "Felt Tone" Powerstroke 3 bass drum heads (also new as of NAMM 2017)? These are Powerstroke 3 heads without the muffling ring (therefore making them an Ambassador by default I guess), but a built-in felt strip is used in place of the muffling ring. According to Remo, the felt strip is "free floating", but it is placed vertically on the head, not around the perimeter like all others (Aquarian Super Kick or Evans EMAD, for example). See attached photo.

I'm a big fan of Coated Powerstroke 3 bass drum heads (with the normal muffling ring). I have a feeling these would sound pretty good as well. They are available in coated, hazy and Fiberskyn.

I'm also interested in the Classic Fit heads and if anyone has tried them. I've tried the Aquarian "American Vintage" head years ago. Honestly, there was no difference in fit between it and a "normal" head.

Put the Classic Fit on a 14" Gretsch RB floor tom that had the "traditional" problem and it sounds like a different drum. Couldn't have asked for a better result in this case!

Never play it the same way once.

I think I will try a Felt Tone as Reso on the 24" Slingerland..

Video is worth a look... more there on the Classic Fit too..

I too was interested when these came out.. I actually made a homemade

one with a Fiberskyn Ambassador head and glued a felt strip at both ends

but not all through the center, so in essence, like their free floating strip.

I tried it on my vintage 20" Stewart kick that I recently restored, and it sounded

round, full and open. No porthole, tensioned up to 2 turns on the rods.

Very decent sounding..
