They have a long sustain, just a bit darker than Ambassadors. The attack is comparable to an Amby. Work swell for taming bright snares and toms. Compared to Emperors they work better at low volume.

They might be worth have a look at then. I do like the option of being able to tailor the sustain and overtones... can probably get them close to an emperor with some careful tape application and leave leave them more open when need be, whether that's in a dry rehearsal studio (which we record on a tascam unit) or getting some more 'air' and openness under a microphone. Sometimes the emperors are just a little dark/dry/tamed and get a little lost or muddy in the mix.

Wonder how'd they work as resos?

I did, thanks, but I always find the Remo descriptions a little vague and I wanted some real feedback/opinions from some drummers who've used them, particularly folks who are familiar with vintage drums (thick shells, fat roundover edges) and not just modern stuff!

Given the responses I imagine they might work well on larger floor toms, say 16" and larger drums, where you're chasing a lower fundamental and tend to spank 'em a bit more than finesse... could help achieve that deeep rumble a lot of us like out on the far right

These are pretty much the same heads as the Evans G12, which used to be calle G-Plus. It's a single-ply 12mil head. I've used both the older Evans G-Plus and newer G12 and find them to be to "thick" sounding for my playing and the tone I desire. I guess if you're a heavy hitter they may work for you. Personally, I don't feel these would make a good reso-side head. Through years, decades actually, of playing and experimenting with heads, I always come back to a Remo or Evans single or double-ply coated head for my toms. Most drummers always seem to swear by these heads, regardless of all the new heads on the market. Each company always seems to want to reinvent the wheel with already tried-an-true heads. I say experiment all you want, which is why there are so many heads on the market. But don't be surprised if you come back to what has always worked for drummers for decades! Just my :2Cents:

I agree with Idrum4fun. I tried them all and still go back to Remo Coated Ambs on top clear on the bottom. I must have a few hundred dollars in heads piled up.lol. The best compliments I have got on sound were always with Coated Ambs. But then again I play Rogers and Slingerland. I am a new Gretsch guy now though!
