Radio King w/transition badge Last viewed: 8 minutes ago

Hi-

First post here.

This is my first foray into vintage drums so I don't know very much . . . . but am pretty psyched.

I just aquired a Slingerland Radio King from ebay. Always have wanted one after hearing a RK way back in the '80's. (Probably should have bought back then - cheaper . . .hahaha.) According to the badge timeline, I believe its a transitional badge from 1959. It's the 1959-'61 Chicago black & brass badge.

My question is regarding the placement of the badge & muffler. All the pictures I have seen, the badge/air vent is located on the panel left of the snare strainer. The muffler being right of the strainer.

The drum I have, the badge is located on the panel right of the snare, and the muffler directly opposite the badge. The drum looks to be really clean and in good shape. The 3-point strainer is the 1960-'61 version, with the throw off arm twisted and rivited. The arm does not raise above the top hoop.

Any information about the drum, and/or explanation for this peculiar badge placement would be very appreciated.

Thank you

Max

p.s. I would like to post pics but don't know how to resize the image. I am using the Jasc paint shop photo album program.

Ok Doc . . . .I'm not certain if this will work. I've uploaded four images for your review.

Thanks,

Max

Yes, in fact the badge and tone control placement helps us narrow the date on your drum quite nicely. The key is the badge placed to the right of the 3-point, along with the fact that it is the second black & brass Chicago oval. Slingerland's snare drums looked like this from the late summer of 1960 to the early spring of 1961. And the riveted 3-point with twist and other features on your drum are correct for that period.

There you go... you have a treasure, congratulations!
