Pre-Serial Supra Last viewed: 16 minutes ago

Hi Everyone,

I have a chance to buy a Pre-Serial Supra advertised as COB shell and hoops in excellent shape. Missing the BB muffler and had the strainer replaced so, there are two extra holes. He wants $ 325 for it. I see these going for $700-900!! Is it worth it with thextra holes?

Thanks for all the help...

IIRC the Brass Supers would have had a small round knob muffler not a baseball bat muffler. It is possible that it may be a Lud-alloy shell aka aluminum. Nothing wrong with that they sound great too, but not worth the premium of brass. They did make the aluminum shell ones without serial numbers too. Serial numbers didn't go into effect until about mid-1964 and the baseball bat muffler came out sometime in 1963, as did the alloy shell supras. The seller probably did the old magnet test and determined since it doesnt stick it must be brass. Well magnets don't stick to aluminum either, so make sure you do your homework before plunking down the cash on something that is advertised as brass and that may not be. If you can see the drum in person and you have a later supra already, you can bring it along for weight comparison. Brass will be much heavier. Also, if the seller will let you, remove a head and a lug and gently scrape the inside if the lug hole with a pocket knife or file. If the filings are silver, its aluminum, if its brass colored, well then....its brass. This would be the only true way to tell. If it's ebay, see if the seller will do this for you and show you pics of the hole after it is done. Brass color=brass, silver=aluminum. If they won't....I'd move on if you have your heart set on COB....if you can live with an early Supra that is aluminum and you get it for a good price, then go for it.

Thanks Ludwig-Dude!

I will ask for the brass-file test to be done. With xtra holes what should be paid, if pitting is minimal? The muffler is missing on this one.

It would depend on what metal the shell acually is. A Ludalloy shell Supraphonic with extra holes.....$200 tops, less if it has lots of pitting. A brass Super-Ludwig.....probably about $400 with the extra holes. Also one other thing about condition.....if the shell is pitted, chances are it is not brass.....the chrome on a COB drum holds up very well and USUALY doesn't pit. The Ludalloy shells are notorious for pitting....I am one of the fortunate ones to own a 1968 Supraphonic with Ludalloy shell that isn't pitted.....It's probably worth more than the average Supra, but its also NOT for sale...:p

Ludwig-dude, such nice snares they are! Your help and advice are much appreciated. The fact that supra's are still being made after almost 50 years of production says what in your opinion???

If I pick this one up, I will post pics.

cheers!

Early supras had a crimped snarebed just like the supers.....main way to tell is by weight, without having to do the scrape test.
