Please post pics of Barrett Deems in action Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Not sure if this was covered anywhere yet but there have been a bunch of Barrett Deems kits on Chicago CL for sale. Anyone else notice these?

I have not noticed this, but I will check it out and speak with the man that I got the RKs from. As close as he seems to have been with Mr. Deems, he may be able to recognize if they really were Mr. Deems' kits.

Thanks,

Lynn

I have seen those CL listing on and off for about the last year. The prices that I've seen are way out of my league.

^^^^ sorry those pics are small. Maybe you can blow them up a bit. Hey was thinking maybe sometime in the future you can visit the seller and ask his permission to photograph some of his pictures. From a historical standpoint it would be a cool thing to have.

I'll be visiting him pretty soon. I'll try to do that.

Thanks for the pics!

Hi,

Barrett Deems seemed to make for good anecdotes.

This article (An Englishman Remembers Barrett Deems)

http://www.jazzinchicago.org/educates/journal/articles/englishman-remembers-barrett-deems

speaks to his hyperactive and hard-to-travel-with character. Good reading. Louis Armstong notes "You're the only guy in the world that makes coffee nervous>"

Seems he was a drum collector:

"Researching for a programme on Armstrong a few years ago, presenter Campbell Burnap and producer Terry Carter called at Deems's home. It reflected the drummer's personality. By now he collected drums and one bedroom was jammed to the ceiling with them. One of the largest was a bass drum that had been used in Sousa's original brass band. The six cats and three dogs that ran about the house were unimpressed."

There are variations on the stories about the "World's Fastest Drummer" sign. In the book Harold Jones, the Singer's Singer, it's said that when he played a house gig at the Brass Rail (Chicago) he was billed as "World's Fastest Drummer". A club across the street brought in Buddy and put up a big banner "Buddy Rich World's #1 Drummer", then Barrett Deems put up a big banner at the Brass Rail promoting "Barrett Deems World's #2 Drummer"

Probably a few dozen other variations on that chestnut by now.

More good reading here:

Thanks for posting these, Patrick! The man I got the kit from said Mr. Deems was known as a jokester, thus the comment he wrote on the FT head (see the link to my other thread). It seems he certainly was.

Thanks to everyone for playing along! Please keep the pictures and stories coming!

I read somewhere that Barrett never spoke to Mr Slingerland again for not turning up to Gene Kruppa's funeral.

Sounds like he was a man of principle
