The weight seems about right to me. Remember they didn't make matched pairs back then. So you tended to select one that was a bit heavier for the bottom with a slightly thinner cymbal on top. but the weights were fairly close. They were used for jazz, light pop, small acoustic ensembles and big bands. Definitely not intended for heavy hitting rock or country. The thinner, similarly weighted, pairs often gave more of a "chuff" sound then a staccato "chic" sound you'll hear with heavier modern hats with a much heavier bottom cymbal.

As for the low price - in South Africa there's hardly a vintage market to speak about so "old" drum gear sell for cheap. As a matter of interest, what is it that makes the Trans Stamps so desirable? I did not but them because they were trans stamps, btw, i would have bought them if they were any stamps for that matter as I am a raging cymbalholic with absolutely no self-restraint and I would lie awake about these at night unless I buy them or someone else does before me - it's a terrible fate that I have to suffer HurtingHurtingHurting
Can't speak for others, but trans stamps are so desirable for their sound, which tends to be darker with more complex and interesting overtones and a nice amount of wash when riding that doesn't overwhelm and obscure the sticking. The sticking also tends to be somewhat woodier sounding, similar to many old Ks. To me most modern A's are way to bright, harsh, and pingy and just sound awful.
