Cheap or broken cymbals don't necessarily mean crap sounding. I have a pair of vintage Paiste 404 "medium" hi hats (they're so thin you can see the embossed stamp on both sides !) that i use for low volume gigs, and if you close your eyes, they'd give the higher end Paistes such as Dark Energy a run for their money.. Great quality low budget cymbals that were Swiss made, unlike today's Alphas or beginner, intermediate level cymbals which are made in Germany. On a side note, this trio is awesome, and if they ever come to the Montreal Jazz Fest, i'm checking them out !
Playing "junk" Last viewed: 46 minutes ago
All centre lug, by the look of it. Is it Rogers? Can't work it out. Great wrap though, and nice "tight-floppy" sound all around. As for the cymbal being junk, well, it probably is, but if it has the sound you want then it's gold. And you wouldn't chuck it out just because it's not a top line Zildjian!I really like the sound he's getting, and let's be honest, who among us hasn't played a piece of sh!t purely because it sounds right? I know I have!Cool vid, thanks for that!
You would be correct. Center lug 60's Rogers with bottom rims removed, and that awesome finish is a nicely yellowed, Black Onyx Pearl finish.
Interesting video in terms of both the drums and the playing. I looked at other videos featuring him, and it seems he's gone through a handful of older Rogers set-ups without bottom heads, but also what appeared to be a champagne Holiday kit with the bottom heads still on. Noteworthy is that he seems to have settled on a 4-piece arrangement with a single ride and hats, no crashes per se, but a lot of other percussive tools all around him. Some of the bells and blocks have great tone and the "cowbell" that he plays like a stringed instrument is quite cool.
Thanks for putting that video up. Very worthwhile from a number of perspectives.
I've got a West German "Roxy" 22" that foes a great stand-in for my former EAK 22". Funky shape, sounds great. Got it out of a storage locker sale....
Bill Buford said he found his crash on "Larks Tongue in Aspic" in the trash bin behind the studio......
