First, yes ... we try to keep posts/threads NON political, religious, etc ... and the reasons for that are most obvious, and especially so in today "political climate", as it were! That said though ... I agree with you cats completely! Course, this would be a whole 'nother discussion, and on a forum that supports that content. Nothing wrong with this thread so far though! Also ...

As for the state of education commentary...I would agree that US k-12 education as a whole is having a tough time adapting to today's world. I have taught physics and AP physics C in public schools for just shy of 30 years, and although my situation is certainly an exception, it gives me hope. I get a steady stream of truly brilliant students. They have real "work ethic" and social/political awareness, but they also come from generally stable and supportive homes...that is the KEY.
Ludwig-dude has it right. As an ex-teacher, my last run-in with a principal was over 'teaching to the test'. To hell with grammar, spelling, or creating a sentence that conveys a complete thought that supports a rational point in a paragraph.
I was told more than once, that it was my responsibility as a teacher, to read into the answers students gave and to be...understanding...so the best evaluation would be reached. Needless to say, after the district warehoused all the English grammar books and then asked me to teach creationism in my science curriculum, I left teaching.
I don't want to get political and be censored so I'll leave it at that...my intentions were to only voice my personal experience and how those experiences lead to poor grammar and spelling...I feel sorry for employers who have to read resumes and applications from our students.
Is now a good time to bring up how much it kills me that people can't say/spell/type out Slingerland or Ludwig?

HBO had a documentary a few years ago about graduating high school and the principal told one of the students all you need do to graduate is to come to school .
That's it ,no homework ,no tests.
Just show up and you will graduate.

I wasn't trying to be political either, just tell it like it is. If that offends others, well...I'm sorry that the truth offends you but it's today's reality. Deal with it.
As far as your experience as a teacher, it's a sad thing when you are trying to do the job at hand, teaching, and you can't because the system by design won't let you. THAT is a major problem anyway you look at it. The system is broken, like many other things in the US, and desperately needs to be fixed and fixed properly. How does it help society as a whole if the education system pushes out nothing but stupid people with zero basic skills with zero common sense?
Again, not trying to be political, just stating things as they really are. Personally, I hope I'm 6 foot under by the time that generation takes over running things......my parent's generation didn't do so well at it, and my generation hasn't been any better (probably worse)......Sailing2
I got into a flame war with a poster that basically wrote a 1800 character paragraph in the WaPo a few months back.
It was for all intents and purpose, a black page.
When I pointed out the need for paragraphs ,I was told they were a teacher and needed all 1800 characters to make their point.
I rewrote part the post by removing some of the redundancies and made the point with quite a few less characters.
Case in point from my post:
I'm a teacher (not saying where). I teach 8th grade and I can tell you that when I started teaching 20 years ago. 113 characters including spaces
I'm a teacher that has taught 8th grade for the past 20 years. 62 characters including spaces.
