Old Leedy Spartan perhaps? Looking to ID and date it,..help! Last viewed: 11 hours ago

Hello fellas.

I was offered an older Leedy bass drum, size is 28" inches as I've been looking for one for a 1920s trap set I've been working on putting together.

Has one lug missing that would attach to the tensioner. Other than that its supposed to be in good condition. Its supposedly a Spartan model?

Its about an hour or so from me though I'm thinking of picking it up. Price is up in the air, but from what I gather, I think he's willing to let it got for $150.

Now, I've been trying to find out when the Spartan bass drum models first came out and then trying to date this one, but have had no luck thus far. Can anyone lend a hand?

Is the price worth it for this drum?

Is it from the 1920s, 1930s?

(I'm suspecting by its looks, etc. its a 1920s drum?)

Thanks in advance for all the help! Its really appreciated!

If it has a Leedy Indianapolis badge on it then it would be 1920's or older. If it says Elkhart then it is 1930's and newer, also known as the Conn era....not worth as much as the Indy era, but still sought after. These are wonderful sounding drums, definitely worth that asking price.

Well, I'm in need of something earlier anyway,... 1920s era to be specific.

You might be surprised how often 26" and 28" bass drums from this era come up on eBay. Create a saved search and let it email you when it finds something that matches.

A couple thoughts:

[*]Might want to ensure the head size is fairly regular. I bought a '20s mahogany that ended up being 26.5" in diameter. Argh!

[*]Do you really want single-tension lugs?[/LIST]$.02
