Niles COS snare. Last viewed: 7 hours ago

I just bought a Niles 5x14 chrome snare off Craigslist. When I agreed to buy it I thought it was COB, but turns out it was a steel shell. It seems all original but the chrome is not the best. It does sound OK. What do you think it might be worth? $100. $125?

What era is it ? ...badge # ? Black and silver badge, yes ?

The COS's started out pretty good, but in the later years they got kinda....eh....let's say corners were cut, like everything else Slingy made late '70's onward....

Does it have any crimping to the edge (broad metal edge) or is it a very narrow edge, no wider than the drum shell walls itself ?

Yes it has the silver and black badge, and the edge is narrow. Serial#389795.

Smooth face to the outside of the shell, right ? (No grooves) ?

Worth about $100 if no pitting on the shell.....if the chrome is so-so, then it drops to about $75-80.

They were beginning to skimp at that point. Those snares are loud, that's about all.

I often buy these for the lugs, muffler and throwoff alone.

However, as you said, they are a respectable enough rock snare...just not built to the same specs as their older chromes....
