Need some details on my Slingerland 4 piece kit... Last viewed: 40 minutes ago

Hey guys, I have recently came across an older Slingerland 4 piece kit and was seeking out some more info on it.

I checked out the site for some of the info like badge/tag style and SN, but I'm getting some descrepancies..

Basically it's a standard 4 piece kit (Although the snare has been replaced with a newer Gretsch one)

From what I have gathered on this site it's probably a 70's kit.

I'm not a collector or anything, so my concern is the "quality" of the kit as my goal is to use it in my small home studio --- Have you figured out that I'm not a drummer yet ??

If it's of a decent quality, I'd like to either turn it into a 5 piece either by buying the correct hardware to keep it "Factory", or by buying some aftermarket toms and hardware and converting it over to a 5 piece (Suggestions??)

Other than wanting to know a general time line of when this kit was made, I was also interested in the shell construction as well.

Here's what I know:

22" kick/bass drum - SN: 8289

16" Floor tom - SN: 7020

13" Mounted Tom - SN: 7529

Oh yeah, what do they call that color any way??

Here's some pics that should give you a pretty good idea of what I've got:

Any info on this kit would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Rick

Here's a few more pics that wouldn't fit on the original post:

I guess to sum up what I'm looking for, it would be to find out if this kit is worth keeping and getting back into playing shape (Including making it into a 5 piece), or would I be better off trying to sell it off and save the money for a newer kit? ( I don't know if this kit has any substancial value or not??)

Thanks again,

Rick

Well........... hmmmm........... I'm no Slingerland expert, but I believe that color is Blue Strata?? I think that's the name of it. I can't really determine from the pics if it has reinforcing rings at the top and bottom of the shells it looks like it does. Personally? I would hang on to it. As for a studio kit, sure go for it. You can get virtually any sound you like from nearly any drum with the right combinations of heads. Nice kit any way you look at it. :)

Thats a beautiful kit and the color is blue strata. I would leave the kit as is.If you wanted to add another tom to make it a 5 piece take a look on ebay for the double tom mount that will fit into the bass drum mount you have. And then just disregard the cymbal mount thats on the bass drum.My guess would be the kit is later 60's due to the cymbal mount on the bass drum and the lowe serial numbers.I would guess 68' - 69'.Not sure if you have taken a close look inside the drum but most Slingerland drums had a stamp date inside arouns this era. That should help give you more or a year for the kit.Definatly a beautiful kit though...and it doesn't appear as if there were any alterations with the drums.

Hello fellows!

The color is Blue Agate Pearl and the silver and black badge appeared in the 70's.

I have been looking for that floor tom for awhile on Ebay and they have been showing up with the earlier brass and black badges.

The cymbal mount looks like a Ludwig.

My suggestion if you are looking for a five piece is to find the 5 piece. Finding the correct tom will take a little time. Since you are not worried about the asthetics with the badges you should find a tom quicker then me.

In the end it is best not to change the tom mount attached to the bass drum, drill holes are modify the drums if you want them to hold their value. You can find the double tom mount on Ebay as stated by ARCHxANGEL.

Even though you are not a drummer as a musician you should appreciate the instrument and try and preserve it.

Then again they are your drums and you can do what you want with them, just sell me the floor tom first!

Thanks and good luck

David

Quoted post

I checked out the site for some of the info like badge/tag style and SN, but I'm getting some descrepancies..

Please let me know exactly where the descrepencies are on the web site

so I can see what you are talking about and adjust or clarify

The DrCJW section is extremely accurate and it is stated that Slingerland does have a lot of things that just do not match up do to poor inventory control.

I guess there is a chance your drums could be from 69, but my guess is the early 70's.

If the Dr sees this he will correct us all and set us straight!

Thanks

Thanks very much for all of the replies guys!! I've been on other BB's for years, and I've seen more than my share of un-welcomed newbie's .... You guys are top notch!

So, probably 70's, and the color is Blue Agate pearl =

All of the chrome hardware is in very good condition, and the kit in general is in good condition considering it's age.....I guess I'll keep it ........ I was eyeing a Gretsch set at GC :( ........but there is something very cool and comanding about good vintage gear (I've got a '46 Gibson SG that's to dye for )

There's a guy on ebay who's got the double tom mount bracket, I may just grab that so that I'm ahead of the game a bit........then I can just wait patiently for the matching tom :( (I'm guessing that it would be a 12" one? )

The shells do have the re-enforcing rings on the top and bottom(you're talking about the top and bottom of the shell it's self correct?)......is that good or bad? (My guess would be good)

Anyone know what material these shells are made of? (Maple, birch??...)

David - Good eye on the Ludwig cymbal mount...that's what it is.

The low serial #'s are still making me wonder a bit as the #'s on the website page seem to all be in the 10's - 100's of thousands vs. what I'm showing.....but the black badge is clearly 70's.

again, thank you all very much for all of your input and suggestions thus far.

Thanks,

Rick

David - As usual, I am retarded and don't have a clue.... DOH

I rechecked the SN/Date chart and I now see that there is a reset range starting in 1970 in which the #'s would go from Less than 100,000.........this is where my kit falls which appears to be in the area of 1971-72'ish.

Is there a difference in the black/silver badges that were offered in the 70's? I see two pictured on the chart, but I can't tell if they are different or not.

I'm hoping the DR can chime in...but your blue agate set is interesting as it has the '70s badge, with tan interior drums, which I think would put the shells from the last of the late '60s ones, before Slingerland went to the natural interior drums. Also, it has the first version aluminum tom plate on teh bass, which were usually chrome on the black silver badge drums. The Ludwig cymbal mount is a "mod", although not that bad...it may have replaced a Slingerland one, which often stripped. Check the mounting holes on it for an "egged" or added hole. You could find an original cymbal mount, but they tend to be expensive, and unless you want a photo perfect set, why bother?

An 8 x 12 for your set shouldn't be that hard to find. You can easily change the single mount to a double one, but they really don't work that well...I'd find the tom and then use a snare stand or RIMS mount.

These are great playing drums, and the finish you have is pretty desireable, so I'd hold onto it...
