It's a bronze from that time period, nice dry, dark tone with Supra sensitivity. I paid $500-600 for mine as it was 9 out of 10 condition wise. I actually sold it back to the guy I bought it from because he missed it so much!

I'd love to find a 5" version from that time period. The hammer marks kept getting bigger and bigger as time went on.DOH

I've never played one, but I hear they have a warm, almost wood-like tone. Can anyone vouch for that?

So this one MUST be bronze, right?

So far the guy is asking 475 Euros, which is about $610. That seems a bit high though considering the condition of the Snare. would it be possible to get rid of those dark spots on the bronze?

@ElMoonlightDrummer: the stuff i've heard on the Net is great, never played one myself either, but I think there is a certain "woodyness" to the sound, pretty dry, but some nice crack. and loud :-) since i heard it the first time i always wanted one, but the vintage ones are quite rare over here in europe...

Yes, it's bronze.

Not without removing the lacquer or whatever they used to protect the finish. You could reduce it's as well.

I've owned both HH and smooth versions in the 402 model. I wouldn't call the sound "wood-like". The smooth version is dark in tone but still has a low pitched metallic ring; the HH version is equally dark but dryer which might lend to the "wood-like" description. FYI
