Hang on! I must be getting the wrong end of the stick here, but I thought ?uestlove was a Yamaha endorsee, what is he doing putting his name on Ludwig product? Or has he switched?

I guess he switched. He said his first kit was a vistalite. Always loved Ludwig drums.

Jespo that thing is AWESOME!!!

Thanks for kind words and feedback!

Yep.. I think I'm getting good enough seperation between 12 and 13 by tuning the 12 on the high side and the 13 on the low side.

Inside the bass drum is one of the drum protector blankets folded up. It muffles the bd just enough without losing 'that hip tone'.

I wrap each drum with these little blankets before nesting them into one case.

Go concert toms!! :)

what is that bass drum lifter on the slingiespretty cool info please im inspired

That's DW's bass drum, floor tom, Djembe lifter. I had it for awhile... and was about to list it on ebay... as well as the toms.

So I had the toms, the DW lifter and the Guitar Center brochure with questlove sitting on the kitchen table... then things clicked.... Let's put together a breakbeat kit out this stuff and see how it sounds.

The lil sucker sounds great!! :)

Does that mean it's a keeper now? Would be awesome for a smaller stage gig. Seems like most gigs around here are on very small stages.

Oh no! Everyone is going to be looking for the Slingerland Modern Combo 75N now, and the prices are going to skyrocket!

The Questlove kits are available at Guitar Centers in MA. They look decent. Some of the chrome, like the key rod claws on the bass look about as cheap as can be, but you could get better ones from a number of sources.

John is probably right though, if you have to hit hard enough to keep up with electrified guitarists, you might break them. Probably better off with the next size up if you can afford the $600 to $800 dollar range. But these do look as if they might fit behind the seats in my MINI. Car Driving2

Leaving hints around the shop that I really like this kit along with the order number etc...my employer bought me this kit! Mind Blowi

They did mention it would cost me though...lol.

If I want the classic hardware like pictured, it'll cost me another 6 bills....guess I'll use something else until I can find it less expensive in the future. flowers2

Very cool kit Jespo. I have a Gretsch Catalina Jazz kit and I absolutely love it for medium to small venues. 18" kick is nice and the drums sound awesome. Great jazz sound. Then I was doing a jazz gig with a very small stage area and I had seen the Sonor Safari kit and got one of those. That is the loudest little kit I have ever played. The 16" bass drum is a little canon. I even used it with the blues rock band I was in on small venue gigs. Sounded great, punchy and loud. The lugs, and hardware are top notch Sonor. If you want a really small kit that you can beat the snot out of the Safari is it. And for $300 street price you can't beat it. I got mine shipped for that. Wen I got mine the box was a little beat up and there was a small dent inside the bass drum where the toms were nested.

Also just a little flake of ply had come up on the inside of the floor Tom. I told the rep where I bought it from and sent him some pics. Thought maybe they might swap out the floor Tom, but was not really worried about it. The rep said he was having lunch with the Nashville area Sonor rep the next day and to stand by. The next day I got a email that said they were sending me a new kit and to do what I wanted with the other one. Three days later a brand new kit arrived. . Now that's customer service !!!

Hello,

This is my 1st post and I want to say Cheers to everyone.

About me - I currently own the Gretsch catalina club kit. The thing is great but Im looking to go a little smaller & try out a diff. sound/ set.

I am undecided between purchasing the Questlove breakbeat kit or the Sonor Safari kit & would like anyone's thoughts on this.

From what I read, both kits are amazing & I know I can't go wrong with either one. With that being said, I will be using the Sonor/ Ludwig kit for jazz and Drum&Bass/ Jungle.

Sonor Safari - PROS - COLOR ! beautiful purple/galaxy sparkle. haha thats about it...also its sonor - so you know it slams.

CONS - 16x16" "square" bass drum ? I'll admit that I don't have perfect pitch & cant really tell if a square drum is any more finicky / difficult to tune than an odd/different dimension drum - ie 14x16" bass drum on the ludwig kit.

Ludwig Questlove Breakbeat - PROS - Smallest ! that 14x16" bass drum and a 13x13'' floor tom ! + muted covers/ bags ! A great idea to still get some sound out the drum when practicing w/o awaking the neighbors. I really want those covers ! lol ...guess I could always use some bedsheet cut outs if need be.

CONS - That COLOR !? Im not crazy about that retro blue. It just looks old right away...something about that blue, its not the sparkle finish - which also dates a kit slightly.

If these kits are essentially identical size wise, minus an inch here or there on the kits, both with great hardware & wood, am I left to deciding based on color ? lol

Thanks for any thoughts !Jump For Joy

Speaking of which, try out his signature VF stick. It's a 17" long AJ4!

Never play it the same way once.
