Ludwig 22x12 new yorker bass drum Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hey everyone.. So i have a question regarding vintage Ludwig New Yorker bass drums..

I knew that Ludwig made the new yorker outfit for the gigging drummer , so it was more compact to fit in cars and cabs, and that the kit came without a floor tom.. A guy and fellow vintage drum collector i know has a set of 60's Ludwigs made up of orphans.. Tom and floor are 60's Ludwig and aren't that far apart in years..

But the kick looks to be a late 50's 22x12 new yorker, same wrap finish, with nickel plated lugs..

The reason i'm not sure is because i haven't seen the drums in person yet, and can't really tell from the pics, but the closeness and spacing in between the lugs from side to side seem closer than your average 22x14..

Now to my point about why i put up this thread..Has anyone tried a 22x12 bass drum ? Is there any difference in tone, power, and for lack of a better word "umph" , to their 2 inch deeper counterpart ?

Last thing i want to do is spend all this money on a drum kit with a kick that lacks bottom end.. I will be using this kit for my classic rock , RnB , and funk band, so bottom end on the kit is very important to me.. If it helps, i don't cut portholes in my reso head, and don't fill the kick with any muffling..

Any and all thoughts will be appreciated..

cheers !

Really ?.. That's good to know..Big , fat bass drum sound is the main feature with my kits, and is extremely important to me because without that, it just sounds like boxes to me.. My 8 lug rocker is a 22x14 and it sounds superb, so i'm assuming a 10 lug 22x12 will be pretty close to it's bigger brother..;)

I had a 1959 New Yorker bass drum. It sounded great!

I purchased a Ludwig kit 20 years of so ago that had been an estate sale and consisted of 4-pieces in black diamond pearl with knickle plating on the metal, mahogany interior ply and maple reinforcing rings. The bass was 12x22, toms were 8x12 and 14x14 and a typical, I think, 5-1/2x14 matching snare. I can't really recall how the bass sound was, but I think I would have recalled if I thought it was deficient. I think you could take the gamble on that, though if the low end is really your signature you may even need to get to 8 lug Rocker that is 16x22. I had one I bought new in '89 - maple inside and black wrap outsie) and it had all the bottom you could want if you have the car it will fit in. I sold the kit a year later because the toms were deep and required them to be at a height that was uncomfortable for me. That's when I really went almost strictly to vintage sets.

You can tell it's late here. Knickle! Good grief. How about nickel plated?

I use a kit with a 12"x22" ten lug bass drum. A 1960 Slingerland. Sounds great. Plenty of low end. I can actually hear it better from my seat position for some reason.

I have a Powerstroke 3 with a felt strip on the batter and a Remo Weatherking Bass Smooth with felt, strip on the reso. It really sounds nice and deep. Really good ummph.

I have a 1959 New Yorker set and that 12" deep bass drum is one of the best sounding bass drums I own. The modern trend in bass drums seems to be to go deeper and deeper but I'm not so sure that isn't more about appearance than sound.

Here's my set (with added on 1959 floor tom)

Cool kit and cool vid. Guess we'd be OK with a bass that sounded like that!

I used to play a Ludwig Oyster Black Pearl 12" x 22" which sounded fantastic! Heavy "thump", rich tone, easy to play and transport. What's not to like? In fact, I prefer it to the 14" depth and would gladly switch to one on a permanent basis.
