Is this a 60's Ludwig? Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Can anyone identify this drum. it's supposed to be a 60's ludwig snare. I cant find any ludwigs in the 70's with this type of lug, tension rod that attatches to the rim with a lil claw. Slingerland maybe? Serial indicates a 1968 model. The lugs look like slingy.

Looks like a cheap 60's Japanese slingerland knock-off that someone stuck a Ludwig badge on......or could be a ludwig that someone put slingerland lugs on....either way, no idea why......some people's kids! LOL!

OK, it comes to this:

If the holes for the lugs are elongated under the screws, it's a Ludwig with Slingy hardware on it.

If not, if the holes look original and round.... it's a Slingerland, rebadged.

My guess would be based upon the throwoff (it's a Slingy throw, an old Rapid; a Luddy of that era looks like the first image below) and the lugs and unpainted interior that it IS a Slingy, and that all the dude did.... besides criminally rewrapping it...is slap on a Luddy Badge.

But Luddy/WFL Classic Bowties had smaller hole spacings than Slingy Sound-King lugs did.

Also, look for an M, P, or date stamp inside the shell.

The bearing edges may also tip it off, but honestly, for the longest time the 2 companies' edges were so similar, probably not.

'60's shell, my guess. It's a mahogany/poplar/mahogany....

Actually, I think it's a Slingerwig and a very rare drum indeed. You see, back in the 50's, Ludwig and Slingerland joined forces for a very short time (3 weeks I believe). There was a lot of fuss over the name of the *new* company - Many ideas were tossed around... Ludland, Slingwig, etc... they finally settled on Slingerwig and they produced only one snare drum, which I believe, is the very drum we are looking at.

The prototype drum (seen above) was delivered to the Ludwig offices for approval, but the whole thing quickly came to a halt when the Ludwig folks saw that Slingerland had wrapped it in a hideous faux leopard print. The company was immediately disbanded and each manufacturer went their separate ways, leaving only this very rare, somewhat scary example behind.

Here end's this evenings bedtime story :D

Oh, man...you had that story 99% correct...except it was the Ludwig-Heads who chose the wrap and screwed up the entire coalition...not the Slingy folks.FYI
