Jaye, awesome advice. I'm pretty sure I'll follow your advice and fix her up and play her a while. Then decide. But I'm sure that by that time I'll be hooked.
Jonnistix, let's talk. I got your email and will contact you soon.

See what I said - Now you're making money on the deal!!
After closer inspection, I see that the lugs on the black tom are Pearl style lugs. The others... not sure.
Jaye - Yes, I agree on the grain pattern leaning towards luan, but I was surprised by the lighter color. I have a new'ish import set where the grain runs around the shell on the inside and outside (like a US made drums). But there's no question that they are luan. The color of the inside is also much lighter than the older luan kits (outside is lacquer but looks light like maple).
Anyhoo... You can get something for the parts or the set as a whole. You may have to wait, but you'll still get something for them.
THANKS Big Daddy! I am so happy that I found this site and thankful for all of the awesome advice you all have given me.
Now my next step is to find tension rods (I'm missing a few) and snare wires and snare frame. The wires are pretty easy to find on ebay. The frame looks like it will be a bit tougher to find. Any ideas about where to look for that?

[COLOR="DarkRed"]Yar...luan shells vastly improved when they cued-in to making the grain run horizontally. I also agree, those shells aren't the newer luan for sure...and they are lightly colored which might indicate another species....but just that open grain in the vertical direction....that's what makes me figure (especially if someone else here figures they may be Maxwins).
Anyways, yes...not quite firewood yet, so they have some value to 'em.
If they had landed in my lap I would either cannibalize the hardware, or probably just recut the batter edges, wrap them in a cheap wrap color (the $50/sheet variety) and sell the set for about $200.....as-is, it's probably worth about $75-100.

Jaye, awesome info once again. Thanks.
I'm still leaning towards turning them into some kind of electric kit with mesh heads.
I'd recover them and go to more trouble but the bass drum is screwed seeing as it has a HUGE gash in the bearing edge. And there is NO FLOOR TOM! Who would pay anything more than $20.00 for this "set?" Two miss matched Toms and a damaged Bass.
I'm thinking it's time to go cannibal on it!

just looking and watching the interaction between drummers, guys
we are a beautiful breed. while hanging at gigs its always the drummers
that are talking sharing and SUPPORTING ONE ANOTHER! bros
ever see any other genre of musicians do for each other what we do?
not a chance. the other night two guitarists got into it over stealing
of phrazing when they both stole from a guy who was sitting down
enjoying the flap. we were discussing moving back in between 5and 4 like bonham used to do so brilliantly and with such soul. sorry just had to say
this as i'm reading you all help each other out. glad i never changed my
mind and played alto! i would have missed all this friendship and
commroderie. thanks fellas this is so beautiful!
I was going to PM you, but I didn't want you to think this was anything more than it is. I am interested in finding a relatively inexpensive Rogers snare that needs a bit of work. It's for my current resto. I'll trade you a snare if you like. If you are interested, PM me and we can talk. Thanks.
