From mono-plane

I just purchased a 1957 WFL drum kit that was special ordered by CBC Radio Canada in their Vancouver studio back in the day. The kit came with some Paiste and Avedis Zildjian cymbals. The Avedis Zildjian cymbals have no "Made In ______" engraved on them? The Paiste 2002 are stamped with black ink 2002 and have the following serial numbers:- 18" Crash 507149- 18" Medium Crash 438607- 15" Heavy Hi-Hats 542232 and 542233Where can I go to date the cymbals by serial numbers?I'm relatively new to Paiste cymbals having purchased as nice used set of Red Label 2002 14" Sound Edge hi-hats last summer. Thanks,Barry

I'm interested in the 18" crashes if they're up for selling...PM me!

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

just updating this old thread as there are common Paiste questions here

Paiste starting putting serial numbers on its cymbals in 1972 best us researchers can tell

The Black Label 2002s were made up until early 1981 and then the switch to red label occurs (not 1980).

On Swiss Black Label 2002s the first digit of the serial indicates the YOP i.e. 4xxxxx is 1974, 9xxxxx is 1979, 0xxxxx is 1980, 1xxxxx is 1981

All German-made Black Label 2002s will have a serial number starting with a 1 or 2. Unlike the Swiss cymbals they are numbered consecutively. The higher the second digit on the 1xxxxx cymbal the later into the 70s you go i.e. a 14xxxx serial is mid-70s, a 19xxxx cymbals is late 70s (most likely 1978 or 1979). The 2xxxxx German cymbals probably range from say 1979 to early 1981.

and the Paiste-Only Wiki is reconstructed here as part of a bigger wiki:

http://www.cymbal.wiki/wiki/Paiste_Serial_Numbers

My "cheat sheet" for serial number decoding includes a warning about paying attention to the prefix to get the correct decade. You need to include the prefix when you quote the serial number to make in unique. My cheat sheet goes:

prefix : years

blank : 1972-1982

PAISTE series : 1981-1985

PAISTE : 1985-1991

pAisTe : 1991-1997

8 digits : 1997-2011

laser : 2012-

PAISTE series means PAISTE 2002 in the case of 2002s, or PAISTE 404 in the case of 404s, and so on.

The research team (which includes monkeyboy827) is working on bringing all the entries up to date with our current research. Thanks guys.
