How Old is a vintage drummer? Last viewed: 0 seconds ago

I didn't really start this thread as a survey and these numbers can be skewed by so many factors so this is in no way conclusive. Although I might take your advice mcjnic and do some real research.

Based on the responders who included ages..

age........drummers responding

....- 19....2

20 - 29....5

30 - 39....7

40 - 49....9

50 - 59....16

60 - 69....3

70 +........2

obviously not scientific, but may hint at an indication that many of us are late '40s or '50s so if this is true, does it have an impact on the drums we value or collect?

1958 Gretsch Kit
1966 Kent Kit
1969 Ludwig Standard Kit
1970 Rogers Power Tone Kit
1970's Ludwig Vistalite Kit

I'm 61 almost....

I bought my first vintage drum a little over a yr ago. But I was 20 when I bought my first Gretsch kit....which is vintage now (don't have that one).. This is kind of like time wharp stuff. You buy a new DW kit today.....40 yrs down the road someone will be searching for it....and remembering when they could have bought that DW shellpack for peanuts = 10 Grand. A Gladstone snare will be going for $250,000 = cheap

But good question...

Not to be trivial - I think the age of a Vintage Drummer is the age of that person playing the Vintage Drums...at that very moment. In other words - there are a lot of young, old and middle-aged people playing drums of years gone by.

Well I just turned 58 and played guitar all my life and been a collector of stuff along the way but I bought a vintage Rogers kit last year and started filling my empty nest with drums. I really enjoy the people I have encountered doing so.Learning to play can be challenging but keeps the tic toc on my clock smooth!

Well....I'm 56 and have been into "vintage" drums for over 20 years! I won't even go into the horror stories of the lousy craftsmanship of my first Slingerland drum kit in the early 80's. It was a BR kit in Sparkling Silver Pearl! I will say that Phil Hulsey, the local Slingerland rep, came out to my house and verified how bad the shells were. Thanks Phil! With that being said, nothing makes me smile more than a vintage American-built drum kit from the 60's and early 70's. My current 1967 Slingy kit is beautiful, with good craftsmanship. The kit sounds wonderful with the original heads, too! Now, when it comes to vintage drum stuff, just go over to BACKBEATKEEPER's garage. It's like a candy store for drummers. What a collection of cymbals, too! So, I guess the bottom line is that vintage drums hold a special place in our hearts...even the drums that weren't built too well!D' Drummer
