How Old is a vintage drummer? Last viewed: 5 minutes ago

As far as a resurgence, I highly doubt it. Insurance premiums, taxation to represent the massive spending the last couple years and gasoline prices will all absorb the disposable income of most. Collectors of anything valuable will become a smaller, niche, group of well to do people who cherry pick all of the stuff that is for sale, by people just trying to get by. We may be at or near this point right now, actually.

just my two cents

that theory holds true through all types of "collectibles"

Old English Motorcycles started becoming worth BIG money, now everyone wants old Japanese Brit "Clones"

Italian Scooters became worth BIG money, now people will collect and restore Indian Clones of Italian Scooters...

BTW, I'm 39...

Great! now your throwing off my numbers.

Can you think of any older drummers who choose to play vintage? I have a dvd of Steve Jordan playing a combination of newer Yamaha's and some vintage, and there's Questlove (not old) Anyone think of any others?

I think a lot of older drummers play vintage in the studio and we'll never know!

10 sure-fire ways to know if you (or someone you know) is a "vintage drummer" ;

you were around to meet Gene krupa in person.

you had kids in the 1980's who only swore by a "Single" kick drum.

you know how to thrash a kit with the oldschool underhand style?

your kit is rusty and has more holes than It started with.

you remember the meaning of "pigskin"

IF you own a pair of sticks that say "rogers 5A"

you know what a "Grandfather" ride is. (no pun intended)

you have no more room in the basement.

Gate compressors are your arch enemies, but not as much so as "the trigger"

you bought a set from a Ludwig&Ludwig Catalogue.

(BONUS; you remember hearing a remark such as; "this jungle rythem is an ABOMINATION!")

You know you're a vintage drummer if double bass meant 2 bass drums and 2 pedals, no double bass pedal!

You know you're a Vintage Drummer if you can't...if you can't ...if you can't remember what you're reply was going to be.

Im turning 28 and all my equipment is older than i am. Most of my stuff is my fathers age or older.

Ive been drumming for over half my life and i may be one of the youngest on here. I certainly have the oldest equipment out of my other drummer friends though ive seen a couple 40's bass drum/snare combos at shows here.

I dont consider myself vintage though, at 28 i still look young enough to get ID'd for beer even though the legal age here is only 18. Hehe

Glad to see some younger vintage fans on here though i depend on you older guys for your limitless amounts of wisdom!

My girlfriend is in her early 30s and is a drummer as well, does anyone else on here have a wife/gf whos also a drummer?

My 54WFLs and my 50s Zildjian As hold so much historical significance im only beginning to learn of their histories. As a history student, this forum is one of the greatest places to find out about a part of history id never hear about in a University course.

I am glad to see young drummers experiencing the joys of vintage drums, if only because I have so many fond memories of those same drums.

"i depend on you older guys for your limitless amounts of wisdom!" We definitely have something that is limitless, but I'm not sure if it is wisdom!!!

"does anyone else on here have a wife/gf whos also a drummer? " I think if my wife was a drummer, you'd read about us in the paper, something like "Wife dies in freak flying bass drum accident, Husband questioned about partial kit sold on ebay"

I agree with you though, when I play jazz in particular I love to play vintage cymbals and drums, I often wonder who the original owner was of my drums and could it have been one of my Jazz idols? I feel like I'm "channelling something from that era into my music.

Thanks for contributing MbbW, your opinions are as valid as anyone elses.

Heh! At one point in my career, I was on the road allot. Sunday night or Monday morning found me at the airport. I'd get back Friday evening. I just didn't play anything for that period in the mid 80's. Actually, I hadn't been keeping up at all. I'd traded around for the Camco kit, but it was stacked up in a closet along with all the parts I could find while I was out and about. On one of those trips, I was only about an hour away from an old friend from my drumming days in the early 70's. Made the call and took a few days off and went visiting. We were both single at the time, and he mentioned a rockin' club downtown. So we went. When the band started I was amazed and mentioned to my friend that while I'd seen plenty, I'd NEVER seen anyone with such a fast foot. My buddy looked at me like I'd grown another head. The next day he took me to a music store and introduced me too the double kick.

Still don't like 'em. One drum, one thumper. That's my motto.

Ya know, confession is good for the soul... I feel as if a weights been lifted off my chest!. Or maybe it's the chili I had for lunch...
