Rodentia Measuring rods. These were fairly stiff and cumbersome measuring sticks made from the stretched and dried bodies of voles or muskrats. Due to the inherent imprecision, they were phased out.

I don't know. From all the eBay and Craig's I've looked at, I think that measuring method is pretty common.
