Hawaii becomes 50th State! Last viewed: 54 minutes ago

It happened again today.

I placed a bid on eBay before I went to sleep last night. Woke up and checked the listing - OH BOY! I WON!

So I promptly went on Paypal and paid.

Then I checked my emails, and I have a message from an eBay seller named "scary" that says:

Congrats on the win... Since you live in Hawaii let me get the exact shipping amount today for you.

I'll then send you an invoice that you can pay.

Thanks

Dan

That's scary...

The deal was a deal - I got a 15" Ludwig slunk for $6.50 and $8.70 shipping.

I'll break the hoop, resize it for a 14" and retuck it. So I'll end up with a 14" slunk for $15, I've seen them go for $70. I got a slunk last week for $18 - it had a pinhole. Calf has been less than 1/2 what plastic costs for me and they last pretty much forever.

The original ad for the head said "Shipping and Handling United States $8.70". The head I got last week cost $6.50 to send here by Priority Mail.

Back to today's head: Yes, Hawaii became a state of the USA on August, 21, 1959. It is actually a state of the USA and we have federal income taxes, holidays... dang we even get to vote for the fools who say they're going to do the things they end up not doing!

The signs on the highways here even say "Interstate" on them... and I guess if you had the right car and you just kept on going you would reach California eventually, sorta.

Too funny....I wonder how they figure "interstate" since there's all this water around your state.....Hmmmm

My brother here has got parcels from the mainland with customs declarations stickers on them.

I was at Checker Auto one day and they had a whole garbage can full of ice scrapers by the checkout. I asked them if they knew what they were for and they didn't have a clue.

The other day I was in Checker and saw these things you mount on the front of your car to scare away deer. Deer? Hello? How 'bout one you mount on a surfboard to scare away sharks?

But then again, one of my best friends in Nova Scotia says they sell tons of Hawaiian shirts at the Walmart there so I guess it's all part of the Global Village thing.

Hehehe. Yeah....I don't get why people try to pull that extra-service charge for HI.

...m'gosh...I have seen US Post Offices there.....I know I have....

But, with that said.... the thing I like about Hawaii most flower is that it doesn't feel like the rest of the country.....

You're right it has never really feels like the USA here, and in a good way... don't get me wrong there's places in the 48 states I have a bond with.

It's like going to prison and befriending a guy who bench presses 350lb and can beat the crap out of anybody.

That pretty much sums up why Hawaii is part of the USA, and compared to the other choices available in '59 I'd say it was the best choice available for sure!

If he said a certain price 'in the USA', I would definitely hold him to that. He might lose out on shipping, but it's his fault. I have made similar mistakes and the only thing to do is learn and move on.

Well, UPS offers Ground Shipping to Hawaii, I could never figure that one out either... (why is my package all wet?).

On a serious note, if you have to ship to Hawaii, it does cost a little bit more for USPS Priority Mail than it does from say Chicago to Phoenix, but not a whole lot more. USPS Priority Mail is almost always the best way to ship things here. It usually takes 4 - 5 days.

If you think of it, sending it to Honolulu versus L.A. should only mean an extra stopover and a 5 hour plane trip. The days when sending stuff here is a big ordeal are pretty much over, or should be.

UPS and FedEx are good but usually not financially viable.

USPS Parcel Post is next to useless - you save a tiny bit and it takes 4-5 weeks, not days... I rarely use it.

The flat rate boxes work the same here as the rest of the states - what a deal!

In the last few months I've received mail from NYC in two days, and a letter from Kauai to Oahu took over a week (delivered by dolphin!).

...sorta is right...you would actually hit the middle coastline of Mexico...closer to Guatemala than CA. I'm shocked at the sheer number of people that believe HI is just off the coast of CA. There's something fun to do at the office...ask your coworkers that question..."Hey Bob, where is HI in relation to CA?"

Even better. Ask your friends what is the southern most state. Most forget Hawaii.

BTW. Alaska fills in the other 3 corners of the compass. Eastern most due to going over the 180 merdian and into the east side of the date line. That question will win you a lot of bar bet drinks... DOH
