Hardware on Mid 70's Slingerland 3-Ply Artist and 3-Ply Hollywood Ace Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hi Dr. I have a question on Slingerland hardware. During the Mid 70's did Slingerland ever occasionally place their hardware in different spots on their 3-Ply Artist and 3-Ply Hollywood Ace Snare Drums than how they looked in the catalogs? I had noticed that Neil Peart's 5x14 Mid 70's Slingerland 3-Ply 8 Lug Wood snare-the one he used for the back satellite Simmons electronic kit with the acoustic Bass Drum and cymbals etc..looks like a Hollywood Ace model with 8 Lugs, but the Tone Control Muffler is in the position of a Slingerland 6 Lug Student Model? Maybe Slingerland made a mistake that day when making drums? Also the Front Butt plate is much different than the extended-snare plate model. Any ideas? Thanks again! Yes, but actual layout depends on the year of manufacture and on the model.

As far as primary factory practice is concerned, the early 1970's layout on most snare drums was like that of the 1960s: tone control, badge, and throw-off left to right in successive panels. In the mid 1970s Slingerland changed this. On TDR models like the Buddy Rich you'll see badge-tone-throw left to right. On drums other than the TDR you'll mostly see the badge two panels left of the throw and tone control directly across on the other side of the drum from the badge. And then there are some other wrinkles from time to time.

And BTW - careful on Slingerland's catalog pics. Many snare drum photos taken in the early 1960s were still being used in 1970's catalogs!

A lengthy exposition is reserved for an article, so if you post a picture or two of the specific drum you are curious about we can pin things down.

Hi Dr. Thanks for the response back. I am not sure how to post a photo at all. I only have a description of what this Slingerland snare is. I know it is 5x14 with 8 Sound King Lugs with a Zoomatic, and not the common 5.5x14 size. The Tone Control Muffler is furthest to the front, rather than in it's usual spot. It is in the spot on the drum that looks like a Deluxe student model-which has 6 lugs and not 8. As far as the Grommet Badge goes I can't tell from the photos I have seen where it is on the drum. Maybe this 3-ply Artist Snare is from the Mid to Late 1970's? Thanks again. Phil Cormier Fitchburg, Mass 01420
