Gretsch RB 6 Lug Snare-Whats it worth? Last viewed: 50 minutes ago

Loading...

I have the chance to pick up a Gretsch round badge snare at a local music shop, but want to make sure its worth it. I believe its a renown model snare, 14x5. Its a 6 lug model, original lugs, hoops, keyholder and butt end. Appears to have been repainted, but could be original black laquer paint as there are a few dings and scuffs. Missing the muffler and there are extra holes under the non-original cheapo snare strainer. Needs heads needed of course and the snare wires are some taiwan cheapos on it right now. Definately a 6ply drum, has its original label and silver/grey paint interior. Asking price is $90.

Is this too much for the condition of it or am I getting a decent deal for a resto project? If I did pick this up I would probably just buff out the finish and find the correct strainer and muffler to put back and use it, not looking to make huge dollars off of it, but would like to be able to recoup investment IF I did have to resell it.....opinions??

Seems to be about $160-200 for a 6-lugger....but you would have the extra holes and some non-original hardware to deal with, so that might drop the value...I dunno, after all is said and done, maybe you could get $125-150. Is it worth the trouble ? that's the Q....

So......worth it you think then? not mint by any means, but looks to be restorable/usable...has cast hoops and a Yamaha throw off on it now....has holes plugged with bolts for the original renown style throw off, plus a set of holes plugged with bolts that appear to be a ludwig p-83/85 style pattern.....I'm sure if plugged correctly and touched up and then a renown strainer was sourced it wouldn't look too bad. It does appear to be the original black laquer finish upon closer inspection.....either way, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna pick it up tonite....seems like it might be worth the effort....

Well.....I did it....I went and picked it up....got it for 80 bucks too!! I'll post some pics of it the way it is now, kind of a before shot....not sure if I'm going to re-wrap it or just live with the holes and put the correct strainer on it......either way the yamaha throw off is going to go eventually.....sounds pretty good the way it is now.....think 42 strand Gretsch snares might be too much for this drum? anyone?

Well...I've done some cleaning up on this drum today, and did some research on the model as well.....also touched up the chipped lacquer finish in spots. Buffing and waxing to occur later after the paint cures. The chrome cleaned up nicely, the cheap taiwan snares are gone and replaced with a Puresound Metrix 30 strand set I had kicking around (see last pic above). I am going to order a new Gretsch muffler and Drumkey and holder for it. The exsisting holder's clip is missing.....unless someone knows what kind of clip is supposed to be in there and can be had by Gretsch still? And as soon as I find the correct strainer, the yamaha one will have to stay. I'm not planning on plugging the extra holes, or re-wrapping this drum, just going to leave the finish as is and live with the holes. A battle scar or badge of honor maybe? As it stands, this drum sounds a lot more expensive than the model was originally intended to be! What a great sound! Rivals some of my favorite Ludwigs....maybe I'm gonna be a Gretsch convert! LOL

BTW, I found out it is a Dixieland model snare, probably from about 1964 to 1969 or so? (my best guess anyway) The earlier pics and catalogs I've found all show the Dixieland with single flange hoops and claws. The cast hoops don't appear in the catalogs until the 1964 catalog on the Dixieland. Also the tag inside was originally marked 4105, but the 5 was grease penciled over with a 4 and looks to be original and something done by Gretsch at the factory. So this would be a Dixieland model 4104? I've also heard that Gretsch started marking out the gauranteed shells wording on the labels at sometime? This one is not marked out, so maybe with this info someone can chime in and give me a closer approximation of age of this find of mine?

Also, see my wanted posting for a renown style strainer for this drum. I would like to at least put one back on the drum to make it look correct. Note that I said correct and NOT original.....the drum can never be original again since it's been messed with over the years.....at least I can make it more correct.

The hoops are probably worth 80.00 alone.

You're probably right, since I haven't seen 6-lug cast hoops in a looooong time! Walking
