Does this White Tiger Pearl look funny to anyone else? I was looking at these and the wrap just doesn't look right to me. I don't know. It almost looks like there is too much of the white in them or something.

To clarify this, I wasn't planning on buying these drums or anything off of the cyber flea market. I just like to use it as an appraisal service and try to find a kit like mine to pop up to see what she is goin for these days.

Have a wonderful evening

I had noticed that. It's most likely a very nice example of it, but to my eyes it appears as if the tiger stripping is a bit anemic. I don't have a huge amount of experience with this finish, so I honestly don't know for sure. Those stripes do look very thin and broken to my eyes, though.

I saw this one yesterday as well, the whole kit seems a little funky. 5ply with rings?, 6ply, and 8ply shells? I can't recall ever seeing a Slingy kit with BD hoops completely covered?

Here's a word of caution from the good Doctor about this wrap

I had read that whole Slingy section before and he is alluding to the possibility of the leftover original wrap being used on lesser drums. To me, that wrap doesn't look right. I haven't ever seen a White Tiger drumset in person but my red tiger wrap looks to me that the tiger stripes are more pronounced. Mc saying the white tiger stripes were anemic was perfectly worded. That is kind of how I saw them too. I never even noticed the 5 ply stuff. I don't know how to tell the difference in plies. Mikey's eagle eyes seem to still be 20/20. That grommet had some pretty strange marks on the inside of it once I zoomed in like he said.

No offense to the seller if he is a member but my thoughts are 100 percent fugazi. Book it.

Good eye on the wrap, drumhack..... thanks for posting this.

Yep, he's talking about that.

He mentions looking out for forgeries and checking other features aside from the wrap too, which helps in this case.

Just a related point of interest.

Something that gets me is that this seller sells a lot of drums, and has 100% positive feedback....... So he knows his drums, and yet he lists this as Vintage Slingerland, and states he believes it was assembled in the Slingerland factory in the eighties with Keller shells and seventies hardware??

That's quite a stretch......

He might even sell the set if he took off the badges and just got honest about it.

The wrap and all of the hardware except for the floor tom legs, including hoops, lugs, rods, etc are consistent with Niles era drums from the mid1970's and are in excellent condition with minor pitting and a few small rust spots here and there. The White Tiger wrap in in excellent condition with tight seams and minimal wear and fading. The maple shells are a mix and match grouping unlike any shells used by Slingerland in the 70's and were most likely made much later (mid to late 80's?) by a 3rd party supplier like Keller. As near as we can tell, this kit may have been made during a period when Slingerland was transitioning between owners and factories. It was common for workers during those periods to simply order random ready made shells and use whatever wrap, hardware, and badges were lying around the warehouse. We cannot say for sure if this was the case, but based on our research it seems the most likely scenario.

First, the seller is George Lawrence. I think this may be from the estate he is liquidating. He is a member of this forum, and is also the editor of "Not So Modern Drummer". He knows this kit is sketchy, it seems to me in his description that he has thinly veiled his warning to the vintage drum world so the owner maybe won't catch it. I think he knows this and the wording is such that the drumworld will not make the mistake of buying them thinking they are the real deal. He has listed in the "For Sale" section that he is selling off a large collection and I believe this may be from that collection. We could always PM the guy and get his "behind the scenes" evaluation....

Chewie:guitar2Not interested in the kit at all. I just wanted to apply the hundreds of hours spent on this forum to something. Probably to justify it to myself and more to the point, I am naturally suspicious about anything and darned near everything.

I have a beautiful mint 72 Slingerland 3-ply WTP kit (20x14 kick, 12 and 13 rack tom, and 16x16 floor), of which I am the 2nd owner. I just picked up the 14x14 and 10x10 3-plys from George's listing on ebay (he was willing to break the set up). They should make a nice complement to my kit even if they are 7-10 years newer and of possibly sketchy origin.

I probably won't receive them til the end of next week (around 6/18), but I'll post some side-by-side comparison photos with my 72 kit, if anyone is interested in how the wraps match up.

Drum gal playing:
[V-Drums: TD9&TD12, VH12, Hart Pro Snare (as tom), PD125 (2), PD105 (2), CY12R/C (W/Bell Fix), CY8, CY5, KD85, 2 Smartriggers (Ride&Crash), "Stealthed" Ludwig Snare]
