Ah... not quite. Not as long as Buddy was around he wasn't! LOL!! Funny story: Barrett Deems was playing a club in Chicago back in the day and had a sign in front of the club billing him as "The Worlds Fastest Drummer". Buddy popped into the club and went right up to Barrett and said, the worlds fastest drummer? Really? Barrett promptly went outside and removed the sign. True Story! Regardless... Barrett Deems was an excellent player and was pretty darn fast too... just not Buddy fast! Tommyp

Did Barrett play the chair before buddy played the stage to the audience ?

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

As I understand it, and was told to me by my Drum Teacher from the 60's, Phil Stanger, (who was close friends with Barrett for literal decades right till the end of Barrett's days) the title "World's Fastest Drummer" was invented-given by Barrett's wife. [Attachment: 53518][Attachment: 53519]Here's a couple pics of one of Barrett's sets, and this one is mine. The first Pic shows it on display for sale at the Chicago Vintage Drum Show. This was 2000, or 2001, my memory has gotten a bit fuzzy on which year this was? This set was supposedly manufactured in 1980 for Barrett. The set came home with me that afternoon after some "small" cash traded hands. I met the then owner of the set six months prior to that day, as he sold me a flawless 1960 COB 5x14 Supra (which I later sold back to him, shucks!)The second pic is the next day, with the set roughly set up in my living room, then living in Chicago. The next week all new Paiste Sig Series Cymbals, and New Beat Hi Hats were gotten from the Drum Pad in Palatine, Ill. Original Slingy Heads were stored, for Evans G1, then later Remo Ambassadors. The BD Reso Head is original. As for hardware, I later swapped out the old Slingy BD Pedal, HH Stand, and Snare Stand for a Tama Iron Cobra, DW Snare Stand and DW 5000 3-leg (I of course have all the original hardware retained). The Cannister Throne has gone into a later new constructed H&B Vulcanized Case as this Set didn't come with a case for the Throne. I later acquired a mint Prototype COB 6-1/2"x14" Spitfire 12 Lig that was also Barrett's, and acquired from the same seller as the Set. (Well, we did a trade for a mint NOS Big R Dyna I had) Mark

Cool score! Thanks for sharing that.

Lynn

Here's one vid of Barrett with Benny Goodman in Warsaw in 1976 when they toured Eastern Europe.

This Set was the other Barrett Set I could've bought from the same seller I bought the Krupa Tribute Set from (Randy Siefert), it was also offered to me to buy.

Was just too hard to also buy, as I just didn't have the room, thought it was sensless to have two virtually identical sets (although this particular set (in this vid) is 4 years older than mine, and oddly had two Floor Toms which didn't exactly match, one was more yellowed) I seen the set personally at Randy's House.

Also, too much of my money was going in so many directions back then, just really couldn't afford it.

Again, this set had all the Humes&Berg Cases, and as you can see in the Vid, had the big "BG", as well as Barrett's "BD" Insignia on the Bass Drum.

My Teacher, Phil Stanger, who spoke with Barrett on a daily basis, right up till the last day of his life, swore Barrett NEVER played with Benny Goodman, nor ever toured Eastern Europe. Well here's the proof!

One can find Benny G Vids in Warsaw, and in Prague, and you'll see Barrett (although sporadically) in these vids.

As I last recall from Randy, ths particular Slingy Set now resides in Italy. Mark

Some other little tidbits that my teacher Phil told me about Barrett.

Barrett was of course a Slingerland endorser for many years. But he had a propensity of being in deep doo doo with drum companies, and Phil had told me this about such endorsers. Phil himself was a Sonor Drum Co Endorser for many years.

That back in the day, Slingerland would commonly give, or should I say "borrow" two new sets of Drums per year per endorser. Barrett was no different, or exception.

But Barrett would often give, or perhaps more truthfully "sell" such sets to others, and when Barrett would want another latest greatest set from Slingerland, they would ask him, "Well, where's the other Set we gave you?"

Thus Barrett often found himself in deep doo doo with Slingerland over the years.

In the end, after Barrett had passed, his wife sold everything to 2-3 freinds, who were also what could be called collectors-investors, and bought everything for literal pennies on the dollar. Even drums that didn't even belong to him, but were borrowed, such as a quite special Snare Drum which belonged to Roy C Knapp, and Roy's Son as I understand was not at all happy with Jane, Barrett's Wife.

The set I have, which if you more closely examine it, was an Endorser Set, by the special Badges on the Shells.

I've only ever seen, or heard of one other Slingy Endorser Drum for Sale recently, a Louis Bellson WMP Spitfire 12 lug Snare that a buddy, and vintage collector Steve Maxwell was selling a few years back. The asking price for that Snare? A cool $4,000. I'm sure there are many more out there, but I'm no wordly collector to know all.

Of course anything can be bootlegged and counterfietted, but I don't believe the set I have was, nor the Spitfire WMP Bellson Snare that Steve had.

Steve's the sort of guy who has never bought, owned, or sold garbage. Only the best of the best would do for Steve, and I have bought a drum from him in the past, and still have it, an absolute flawless 5x14 Buddy Rich COB TDR Snare.

In personal face to face conversations with Steve at his house, I had found Steve also knew quite a bit of some history about Barrett, and can share many interesting things, and some facts that many may not even know. Steve had some really cool pics of, and with Barrett, had quite a bit of memerobilia, and even laid a sealed pair of 19A Barrett Deems Slingy Sticks on me that afternoon.

And yep, I still have them and they are still sealed. Mark.

Another little funny story Phil once shared with me about Barrett, the time he got busted with a handgun in his possession.

Barrett was supposedly having breakfast one morning at some restaurant, I believe in downtown Chicago.

And the subject started about guns, and such, and Barrett's bragging, and telling his friend sitting with him at the Booth, "Yeah, I carry my .38 wherever I go, and have it with me right now", and who's sitting at the next booth, was a Chicago Cop! LOL

Phil said it cost Barrett $1,000 to get out of that little snafu.

Some other commonly known tidbits about Barrett, was that Gene Krupa and he were best friends. Barrett was in fact one of Gene's Paul Bearers when Gene passed in 1974.

Hence, as I was told, this was the reason for the building of this particular set I now own.

That around 1980, Barrett had this "Tribute" set made for him, as he was playing many Krupa tunes with his own big band at the Elbo Room on Chicago's north side. Mark
