Finally got an RK kit - supposedly Barrett Deems' Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Loading...

Hello all. I was contacted last Tuesday by a friend who said a friend of his was looking to trade a Radio King kit that he got from Barrett Deems. He said he was looking for a Buddy Rich type kit, preferably Slingerland or Gretsch. I figured it was a long shot, but I called and told him about my late 50s Slingerland kit, which I had acquired a matching, period-correct canister throne for 2 weeks ago. He said that it sounded like what he was looking for...he wanted a 22" bass drum.

I asked why in the world he would want to part with this kit. He said he rarely plays it (about 3 times a year at special jazz events) because of the 26" bass drum, and he's had it since the 80s. I figured there would be no way he would trade the kit for mine, but he said I was the type of guy he wanted the kit to go to (someone who would respect it for what it is and take extra good care of it) and I had exactly what he wanted and my kit was in great shape. He said the canister throne sealed the deal because of the added value and he thought it looked real cool with the kit.

I can't say that I have hard evidence that this kit belonged to Barrett Deems, or whether or not it was on stage with Louis Armstrong. However, I am quite convinced by the number of pictures of this man with Barrett Deems, that he knew Mr. Deems on a personal level, and have no reason to doubt the story. The only verification I do have is a picture of the original calf skin FT head that Barrett signed (picture 3), which included a little inside joke. The story is that this man played at the Playboy Club in Chicago in the 80s (I saw a Polaroid showing this man and Mr. Deems with two scantilly clad women wearing bunny ears, so I'm sure this is true), so when Barrett wrote "this is the best head of all"...you get the picture.

So, here it is! Picture 4 shows the 1945-46 cloud badge and picture 5 shows the 1950-53 oval badge. The story of the different badges is that Slingerland made a "10 lug metal shell Radio King" for Mr. Deems with this kit. He liked it, so he kept it when he sold the kit. This early 50s RK, I'm told, is the drum that Mr. Deems got to match the kit and use on gigs because he liked the tone and feel of the wood RKs, and the metal snare was too ringy for his taste, so he didn't play it on gigs.

More pictures to come.

Wow Lynn, I'm in deep puppy-love with that kit! The word, 'mojo' was invented to describe it. Must be fun to play. How does it sound?

Congrats...

Picture 1 shows that the snare is slightly more gold than the rest of the drums, and has what I call "leopard spots." The gentelman said that the kit looked like it does now when he got it from Mr. Deems in the 80s. He said Barrett told him that they were gold sparkle. He said that he called Barrett when he took them apart to clean them after noticing no color difference when removing heads (see picture 3) and hardware, but Barrett was insistent that they were gold sparkle. He said that he spoke to Don Osborne, asking if Slingerland ever used a "ginger ale sparkle." He said, "Don told me they never had that color that he knew of...but he didn't take over Slingerland until the 70s. So, he wouldn't know for sure if they did in the 30s and 40s."

I read the following today in the Slingerland drums finishes article on VDG: "Sparkling Silver Pearl - 1934-1956 - This is the first version of Sparkling Silver, consisting of uncolored crushed glass. When new the finish is a startling bright white. With aging it becomes darker and can yellow, but really has a beautifully distinctive look. Relatively rare." This kinda sounds like what I see, but it's hard to say that Barrett Deems wouldn't have known what color his kit was when he got it. So, what say you people? Sparkling gold, or sparkling silver?

Moving on, picture 2 shows "leopard spots" on the bass drum. These are present on the 3 toms, but not nearly as bad as the bass drum. The man - who has worked extensively with wraps - explained to me that glass glitters will cause the color in the wrap to dissipate over time, causing these spots. I may have that mixed up because I'm having a hard time remembering exactly what he said. For those of you that know about this "leopard spot" phenomenon, can you elaborate? I just don't understand what causes this, and I would like to.

Picture 4 shows an extra strip of wrap that was added at the seam. It appears this is because the first piece didn't completely cover the scarf joint. The man told me that Barrett said that was there when he got the kit. The good news is, it's down tight. This picture also shows the Ludwig spring-loaded leg brackets on the FT. The story is that Barrett had them installed becaused he liked them better than the ones that Slingerland put on it - the eye-bolt/wing nut type. Fortunately, this did not require extra holes or the existing holes to be drilled out.

A couple other non-original issues are: several 60s/70s Ludwig tension rods, 4 bass drum T-rods don't match the rest, and several chrome replacement hoop clips (to be expected). The gentleman said he has considered finding the correct rods, but never had the heart to change it from the way Barrett had it.

Lastly, picture 5 shows the beautiful interior of the FT. With only 2 minor exceptions, all of the interiors and bearing edges look great. The exceptions are: 1)a little bit of a flat spot on the bearing edge of the 13" tom, which I'm not worried about because it tunes up nicely; and 2)one of the seams of the interior mahogany plies in the bass drum is lifting slightly - which I was told has been that way, and not gotten worse, since the 80s.

Oh yeah, sizes are 14x26, 9x13, 12x14, 16x16 and 5.5x14 single-ply maple snare.

I'd love to hear your comments!

Thank you, Jeff! Yes, sir, very lucky! I hated to part with my beloved WMP kit - I put a lot of time and love into that kit...and had been looking for a canister to complete it for a year. I nearly cried as I was leaving, but I was giddly like a schoolboy as I rode home with the FT in my passenger seat. :p

Thank you for the kind words, John! My thoughts exactly! If drums had mouths, I would love to hear the stories of the guys it's been onstage with, the parties it kept going, the bodies it kept moving, etc...

The bass drum sound thunderous, especially with the calf head on it! The snare kills! The toms were tuned quite high before we pulled the batters off to inspect, but the tone was beautiful. He has coated Ambassadors top and bottom on the toms, save for an Emperor on the batter side of the 14 and an old coated Gretsch PermaTone on the reso side of the 16. I'll probably back off the tension a little to pull some of those beautiful mids and lows out of them. I'm by no means a jazz drummer (though I really want to take lessons from the guy I got them from), so I prefer the deeper tones. However, tapping on them made me think of SO MANY great old jazz tunes. Sounded just like the old recordings.

Thank you very much, Vinny! I truly appreciate the very kind words.

To be honest, Vinny, I don't think I will do much to it. It just doesn't need anything, other than a few rusty machine screws. I did take the very small spikes that came with it off and put on a set I had been saving for the day I got an RK kit. :p The others just didn't stabilize the drum much as I was mounting the 13" tom...it kept wanting to topple over.

Thank you, Glenn! I agree. They may not be a brilliant gold or silver, but the color of the toms is quite nice to me. Like John said, it's got so much "mojo" that it doesn't need to be "pretty." Any other kit with a wrap in the condition of the bass drum, I might consider a rewrap candidate. But, to do anything to this kit would be unthinkable for me.

Again, thank you all for the very kind words! I wish you all could see them in person. I am in awe of the piece of history that is now in my possession, and I'm sure all of you would be too.
