This repair will work fabulous on small holes, however, the larger the hole, the more important the contour of the top of the dowel will be. On a fairly large radius I think the dowell would need to be ground down to match the contour of the shell, not to mention alighning the contour of the plug when installing it in the shell, furthermore, this might work on pearl wraps, but one would have to match the grain of the plug to the grain of the wrap. Heat is the key to cutting the plug. FYI

I did fill up the hole with the glitter glue, but the bottle glitter glue had silver and a few red, blue speckes in it, so I sprinkled large silver glitter on top. One hole is not filled all the way, but the other is, I plan on further experiments on filling holes with glitter, but the color choices are very limited.

Notice where I burned the wrap just under the top hole. Good thing this is a experimental drum, but the lug will cover up the burnt spot and the plug anyway. Heat really softens up the 40 year old wrap. The hollow punch cuts right through the heated soften wrap.I tried it without heat, but it wouldnt cut it. One reason is because the shell flexes when I hit it with a hammer. If there were directly over something solid It might cut it. Like maybe a 2X4 on the ground and firmly under the spot Im cuttin, BUT it could possably split the brittle wrap. Heat is easier than fooling with all that. A good hair dryer might work, but I use a cheap heat gun. Get a cheap heat gun at lowes for $25. I already had mine. We use professional heat guns in my business, to heat up vinyl to make it stretch more, so I am very familiar with the dangers of getting material too hot.

Really nice job and great pics and writeup!!
Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

The hollow punch set. You can get a hollow punch set at Harbour freight for $8. Home depot has a set for $25-$99, ace hardware $8.49-$11.99 each, tandy leather has them also sold each, but more expensive. Tandy calls them a round drive punch. The set I have came from my shop.We use them to cut holes in vinyl, fabric, and door panel boards. I may just go check out some others and see if the higher priced ones are any better....Febay has 335 of these listed

Thanks! I am really excited about my results. I have threroized about this procedure for a very long time, Just never took the time to try it. I believe this is going to help a lot of vintage drum heads repair a lot of sensless holes people have drilled over the years.

The trick to this is this: #1The hole, the dowel, and hollow punch should be the same size. #2 Drill the hole to the next size that matches a dowel and hollow punch. Use a good sharp drill bit to get a fresh, clean, sharp edge on the hole. #3 Use a heat gun cautiously to soften the wrap to cut the plug. #4 Cut a hole in your masking tape with the hollow punch to tape around the hole to avoid getting excess epoxy on your wrap. #5 Lightly tap everything into place before the epoxy dries, so the plug is flush with the wrap. NOTE: I hit the plug and area around the hole with the heat gun when tapping into place. If you are repairing a drum with some sort of grain or design, find a spot under a lug that will match the grain where the hole is. I suspect this could be very tedious.. I am thourghly amazed of the results of this and very excited to repair some holes in real drums!!!
