Educate me on Yamaha made-in-Japan drums Last viewed: 5 hours ago

Loading...

I looked at this 3 piece today, not knowing what to expect. I can't find much info regarding MIJ Yamaha, hoping that someone can help based on these crummy cell phone pictures.

Drums: 8(?)X12, 16x16, ?x22 (forgot to measure the depth), deep red/orange laquer, appear to be maple and are heavy. Serial numbers are in the range of NN3990. The sweet looking Yamaha snare shown is not included!

The good: price (very low), seller admits he has no idea how to tune drums, but they sound rich/deep, interiors are pristine, lacquer finish is just OK but I'm not a fan of the color anyway (could refinish myself), no extra holes

The bad: Clearly was a 4 pc (9x13 tom missing), minor pitting on all the chrome, one bass hoop cracked and may not be repairable, at least one of the floor tom brackets is internally broken and will not hold.

Questions: Am I correct thinking that this was a mid-range kit? Is it maple? Are these Power Tour Custom series? Age? What's the likelihood of finding that missing tom and floor tom legs? Anything else I should know?

Thanks in advance for all replies.

jim

Kinda hard to read the model number, but I believe these to be Tour Custom series. Middle of the road. Birch/mahogany blend. If you could verify the model number on the 12 to be TT812C, that would help.

Tour Custom = 12x8

Power Tour Custom = 12x10

Turbo Tour Custom = 12x12

Yes - the 12 tom serial number is TT 812C and the floor tom is FT 816C.

I destroyed the lacquer on one of those kits from drooling on it in the '80s.

The tour custom was lacquer finish, birch mahogany ply makeup with birch on the inner ply. Great drums. Only the recording custom series was considered the top of the line. Later after the tour custom was fazed out, they came out with the Rock Tour Custom series that had similar shells only with the "recording custom" high tension long lugs on the shells. It would be called Power Tour custom if the shells were deeper.

My guess is it's a mid 80s Tour Custom kit TC182 in Red Wood. Nice kit. I had a Rock Tour Custom years ago. I've always liked the sounds of that blend.

Thanks for all the replies. Once you helped me figure out that these were Tour Custom Series, I found a couple sets for sale and a few random floor and rack toms. Seeing other listings confirmed for me that the price is right. It will be mine in the morning.

Thanks

jim
Finishes Black, White, Red Wood, Cobalt Blue
It looks somewhat orange, must be the low light.
