Ebay question Last viewed: 9 hours ago

Is 75 dollars too much for (8) bass claws with the torpedo style tension rods? A guy has a couple lots of these on Ebay and they are only available as buy it now (I hate that). I could of sworn I just saw a lot of 8 of these go for around fifty bucks a week or two ago on there.

If anybody on here has 8 of these for sale let me know. I'd much rather buy them from someone on here than a guy who strips a drum and sells off all the little pieces.

FYIFYI I am naturally suspicious so if you are the guy telling me what they are worth, then trying to sell me some of these. I probably won't buy them!!!LoLoLoLo

Thanks,

I've seen 'em for less. I've also spied a Slingy bass sell for less than 75. That is the shell plus the spurs and mounts plus the tom mount plus the lugs plus the t's and claws...blah blah blah. So, you pick and choose. Good luck on these. They really do ride imaginary waves.

Thanks. I am ticked off that I can't find the ones for my kit to begin with. I was pretty sure that EVERYTHING was there....you factor in my son, my wife, my daughter, moving these things around the house to their eventual home in the garage and presto, I can't find em!! I just plain out am not going to support that guy on ebay at all. That guy obviously has a couple bass drums stripped down and will make three times what the damned thing is worth parting it out. Of course, if nobody supports this then he will fade away and sell em just to get rid of the stuff I would think.

This is my strategy anyways and I am sticking to it. I will keep my eyes peeled on CL and ebay for these. My drums cleaned up really nice, actually better than I thought they would, so I dont want to put junk claws on after all that mess.

Thanks again for the input.

Who cares were the parts come from if you need them?

I guess I should be thankful and hope more people subscribe to your strategy. Thats less bidders for me to contend with. But the fact is there will always be a market for parts and it looks like it makes sense to part everything out.

Come to think of it, I know somebody by me that is looking to sell a bass drum. Parting it out is starting to sound like a good idea. Especially since sending out a whole bass drum is hard to pack and ship.

I for one care where the parts come from to a certain degree. Believe me, I am acutely aware that my personal boycott will not make much of a ripple in the big scheme of things. I understand that the parts market will be there. I just feel like if I bought something from a seller that has an entire drum for sale, piece by piece in fifteen different auctions, he would be getting over on me, so I keep looking. A damaged drum being used as an "organ donor" is completely logical, but "killing" a drum to profit off it's "organs" is pathetic, of course in my humble opinion.

It is harder to ship a "whole" bass drum rather than parting it out and eventually shipping the shell? The lugs, spurs that can be internally contained and hoops make that much difference when shipping a bass drum? Hmmmm

The parts I seek are not even an auction. They are buy it now only, which is another issue I have a problem with, but that is not for here. I will say why call it an auction when it is nothing more than a cyber-wal mart, but again, not the place for that.

Well, time to get off my Soap Box. Good luck with your future selling of the parted out gear you spoke of. It should be an eventual profitable undertaking for you.

have a wonderful weekend,

I think what he means it that shipping a bass drum in itself is difficult due to the shear size of it. I had a complete 4pc Premier kit for sale on ebay a few years ago and it sold to someone overseas. I based my shipping on the USPS at the time. I found out that they wouldn't ship it because the box was too large. And that was only a 20" bass drum! All the other drums were nested inside each other in the box that was about 24" cube and they deemed it too large! The sale quickly became a pain and I had to email the winner that I couldn't ship it USPS since it was deemed too large and that if they still wanted it, it would have to go fed-ex or UPS for a much more expensive shipping fee. The winner decided to pay the difference and have it shipped UPS so it all worked out, but it was expensive. BTW, I did give them the option to back out, but they decided it was worth it to them even with the expensive shipping, which I split the cost with them on.

Overall though I agree that parting a perfectly good drum is not the way to go. Its drum cannibalism. Mind Blowi One that is damaged beyond repair though, now thats a different situation.

Your ethics here speak volumes for who you are. Nice job.

So, I needed a tension rod for my '63 Supra, and wishing not to fuel the practice of separating parts from drums for profit... I bought another Supra from '63, and used a tension rod from it to.... but wait... I just cannabilized a drum for parts myself!

Not a true story, but you get my drift.........

If someone else parts out their drum for more profit, that's their business... I won't do it, and that's my choice. And if I can use a part from one drum to revive another drum, isn't that about the best that can come of the situation? One drum perishes, another lives again.

So, I have my line drawn, and someone else's is drawn a few feet down the shore.... live and let live.

Heare, Heare!!!

Although I am new to this part of the "vintage" world, I grew up with a mom who loved antiques, and I for one cannot stand people who part out otherwise good stuff. If the items being parted out are damaged beyond reasonable repair limits, then so be it. But look at those d**ks and the rest of the parts they have all about the listing. These are perfectly good sets, and they f--- well, I'm gettin' really hot thinkin' about it, so....

I guess just because I can't afford to buy the really nice stuff my greedy little self wants, I still want to see these go as complete, all together kits, keeping them together for future collectors....

Soap Box

And these words come from the guy who wants to overload his house and garage with 60's Japanese stencil sets....Sumo Dude...at least I can keep THESE together for future generations...

Hurting Hurting

"Ignorance may be overcome through education. Stupidity, however, is a lifelong endeavor." So, educate me, I don't likes bein' ignant...
"I enjoy restoring 60s Japanese "stencil" drums...I can actually afford them..."I rescue the worst of the old valueless drums for disadvantaged Children and gladly accept donations of parts, pieces and orphans, No cockroaches, please...

I haven't found anyone who makes replacement Torpedo T rods for a Slingerland bass drum. So, whether or not some is making a higher profit than otherwise is irrelevant if you need them. If you need original replacement Torpedo T rods, buy them and don't bemoan the other guys good fortune. You still may need to rechrome them too!

Also, just because we like vintage drums, the marketplaced tells us what they are worth, not what we think as fans. Otherwise every old Slingy set would be priced and sell north of $3,000. But they don't.

I am having ten of my original Torpedo T rods rechromed due to pitting at a cost of about $300. complete. High? Yes! But they will be perfect and my original kit will be too when they are on.

If the cost of aquiring Vintage parts for a Vintage drum is just too high, go with aftermarket T rods and enjoy your drums. Way cheaper.
